True. Mainly because those who are potential arsonists often feel the need to be a hero and participate in the extinguishing of the fire. They get off on being in the BRT (big red truck) or the fuss created by the fire and in the past there were very few procedures in place to prevent them from joining brigades. Things have changed in the last couple of years and now police checks are necessary before they can join the NSW Rural Fire Service. I'm not sure about volunteer firefighting agencies in other states but they probably have similar procedures. It is often joked that all members of the RFS are pyro's but I for one like to put the fire out and hate the idea of lighting anything up. It's a shame that a few bad apples have created a reputation that is undeserved for the majority of volunteers.
Kids have a natural fascination with fire and it's up to the parents to allow kids to explore this interest in a safe way and educate them in the consequences of indiscriminate fire lighting.
