Regardless of their motives it is a hazard of the job, storm chasing is a high risk occupation. Their motives may be good and the results beneficial to the wider community but if you play with fire you should expect to get burnt.
The assumption that they aren't thrill seekers is maybe a bit simplistic though, people take on risky jobs like this for the thrill of the chase. This in no way undermines the value of their contribution but it can point to possible causes of incidents ( those looking for the thrill will take greater risks)
