The 2.2L (2.3L actually) diesel engine has not had much done to it in a while, is way under powered (compared to the competition) but awesomely efficient and reliable.
Don't get me wrong, I had an Outlander for 3 years from new and they are a brilliant car for what you get and the price.
They are probably making tons more profit per unit than the competition as the initial R&D spending has been dragged out for so long.
Probably do well with faults and model issues for the same reasons.

You'd think Mitsubishi would be fairly profitable, but in reality they are losing money. The whole alliance tie up between Nissan, Mitsubishi and Renault is a sea of red ink.
Do I recall seeing that Mitsubishi are now withdrawing from Europe?
