Default Re: Mowing ..

The season has finally changed over here with the grass and the mowing load starting to slow down.

We're still busy though preparing for the anticipated rain to come.
Over summer we try to keep the moisture in the greens. They're moisture probed daily and watering can be controlled to the 1/2mm using a formula of existing moisture, temperature and the corresponding evaporation rate. Problem is we can't control the rain leading to waterlogging, fungus and disease.

With this in mind coring commenced this week. We're using 10mm hollow tines at a depth if 70mm. This will allow the water to drain past the root zone and the hollow tines will relieve compaction from a busy summer of play.

We're trying a new tool called the Nordic plow that drags the cores from the green cutting down alot of labour removing them by hand.
The olny downside is that the apprentice has been scoring points on me by calling me Mr Plow and singing the song "Mr Plow is a loser and I heard he is a boozer" Now I resent that I am not a loser

Here's the corer in action, it was a pre dawn start to stay ahead of play.

and in the later hours of the morning.

Another job I'm looking forward too, being in a regional area, is burning off the wood piles. It'll be roast potatoes for smoko on those days...
