Brakes On Capri

Hi All

Just Like To Know What Some Peoples View On Capri 1972 Brakes Are Like ,,
Drum At Rear And Disc At Front Standerd Stuff..but All Fully Rebuild...
Has Anyone Got Them Like That In The Car Still Like That ..do They Say There Prayers Before They Leave For A Drive ,,,,,,,
I Do ,,,????????

Please Send Details People ..on What I Can Do To Inprove My Braking But Keeping The Brakes The Same ....

Whats the problem -

Soft pedal?

Hard pedal?

Good pedal, just not slowing down?

Original brakes on my '70 V6 Capri.
Stops OK for a 40yr old car.
Replaced the front discs with nice new std thickness ones...old seem to have been machined a few times.
Adjustment of rears makes a huge difference to pedal hardness., and therefore some stopping difference.

Simple upgrade is to go vented discs, but need spacer of calipers (kits available), but not sure of wheels/calip[er clearance issues. May not be a problem if going bigger wheels (others to comment?).
Other than that, lots of upgrades around but you may need to go to 14" or 15" wheels to get over the calipers. Rear disc conversions available, along with bigger front discs.
And then there are the 'engineering' certifications for street rego to worry about.
One thing I have found....anything to do with brakes ain't cheap.

And bear in kind, 4 wheel drums were still being fitted on 1976 XC Falcons. Go figure that ......... Needless to say I bought the '74 XB Falcon with front discs at the time (and it was my last Falcon - c1983).

well it seams its not pulling up real well they stop but i just about to push all the way down ...
but illl adjust the brakes more at the rear of the drums ....

Sounds like you may need to rebuild the master cylinder and/or the brake booster.

The master cylinder can be bored and sleeved (cost approx. $120-200) but the booster will have to be sent away and rebuilt (unfortunately this can cost around $500 or more including shipping). My brake pedal perfoms like yours, and I'm getting both items rebuilt as the car will never pass inspection otherwise. I'd also be too worried about driving it.

The vented brake disc + spacer kit for my existing calipers is something else I'll be doing.

mate the mater cylinder has been done when i bought it ,,well i did pay for it to get done ..boster no has not been done at all but tested that and it seams to be doing its work properly....ill do step by step and see what happens .........

It will be the rear brakes. Adjust them until you can hear them just touching - should still be able to turn the druum freely though.

WOGBOY - fit the accelerator cable before the brake booster.
There is a Phillips head screw that holds it to the firewall. Impossible to reach once booster in place.
Trust me, I know these things............

just one question . i mite be slow here but whats the accelerator have to do with braking..were and when the booster goes in .
i know it was a ***** to put in i wish i was told before ...but i did it with alot of pain ...hehehehehehe
i started to find some proplems already started to pull things apart..i have alot of grease on the brakes on the pasenger side .
camming out of the bearing case i say ..
right hand side is great..but all fully rebuilt as well....looks like back on the fix again .need to stop number 1 and yes rear brakes need adjusting...
for sure also has anyone got a vedio clip on the car v6 essex starting up just want to hear and strange noise caming out

In my experience the brakes on Capri's and indeed MK1 Escorts is that they have a built in antilock feature in that no matter how hard you stand on the brake pedal you would still be lucky to lock the wheels up.

Hence why mine has Falcon brakes on all four wheels.

Having said that though I have heard of the flexible brake hoses collapsing internally which gives a nice pedal feel but restricts fluid flow and pressure to the brakes.

CosworthFreak are you sure that the boosters cost $500+? Trevor at what used to be called Australian Brake Sleeving in Queanbeyan does other boosters so I don't see why they can't do a Capri one.

I had my brake booster (capri 1600 GT) redone by a mob in Melbourne, it only cost about $250 including return postage.
