Default Tracing Heritage (building family tree)

Has anyone undertaken this recently? I want to start tracing back both sides of my family, just looking for some pointers if anyone has undertaken this recently.

Most of the work will be through local state library and public records back in Scotland, however can anyone advise how effective/usefull are the "free" only search engines etc (or even notify me of even one of the pay per use sites that are worth what they ask)

Cheers!

Dan

G'day Dan,
I've being doing genealogy for about 13 years. My research has been confined to England (I'm a Pom) although I have done some Scottish research for another person. The best pay-site for Scottish records is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ .
Do you know about the LDS church & their records? They have the greatest amount of genealogical records in the world. Their site is at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/sear...set_search.asp .It's a free site, absolutely magnificent.
Another good pay-site is Ancestry.com & Ancestry.co.uk. It's a subscription site with heaps of records.

Thankyou! Amazing what the internet can find. 10min work back to 1820 on my Dad's side already! 1GBP to view each certificate but well worth it

Cheers

I tried a search on my family tree, found people still swinging in it.
