Will this actually work? How many voters in NSW are between the ages of 18 and 21. Is it political suicide? |

If it gets support, and is then legislated, Im betting pubs at the Goldy, Echuca and Wodonga etc will be rubbing their hands together.
Considering most teenagers (<18) drink at some point, some a lot, she is right, it will not work to the benefit of the community. |

It'll never get up because it'd basically kill the club scene.

GTP006, I travelled to the US when I was 18, no issue getting into clubs. A false Californian drivers license was only $50. Not bad, as the one time I was asked for ID, I just flashed the false license, told them I had recently moved to LA from Australia, even got free drinks because I was an Aussie!!

If this law goes through, it will only increase underage drinking.
That is all.

they moved it to 18 from 21 back in the early 70's(dont quote me although this may be in other states) because of conscription. go to war and kill or be killed but cant have a beer. which i believe is the case in america. 21 drinking age over there?

Well that would be some interesting discrimination wouldn't it?
I would not worry about it though, I suspect that there will be a new sheriff in town shortly..... |

She is against it, as are the greens. Its a private members bill, supported to some degree by the opposition according to the article. She states that in the US, they used to drive to Canada to get around the 21 laws there. She pointed out that at 18 you can die for your country but cant drink. She is just stating as its been presented to parliament it should be open for public debate and comment. If the sheriff changes, it may get up. |

Another pointless exercise, most likely to move media attention from a real issue.

Fantastic. Less immature idiots at the Melbourne Cup, meaning the people that actually want to go and watch horse racing can, without watching sexually-immoral 18 year old girls in mini-mini dresses be felt up by mentally-immature and self-obsessed young men...
Giddy Up!

Immoral, eh? By who's moral standards? Besides, your about 400-odd km away from being relevant with that point... Anyhow, back on topic, I could have sworn I read a tweet from BoF saying he had been taken out of context by the SMH, something along the lines of 'if it were proven to help, its a great idea, but you can't unscramble an egg/put the cork back in the champagne bottle'

He said basically, if we could start again, it would be a good idea to raise the drinking age to 21. But the rest of what you said is right, basically you cant recork the champaign/unscramble the egg. But he left himself open to that interpretation, as what he is really doing is having a bet both ways. When he knows what way the wind is blowing, he'll firm up on it. The part that hasnt been put out much yet is the actual age that would be looked at, 25 is a number that medical people are talking about. As that is when it is believed the average male has the capacity to make reasoned decisions, prior to that, the mind hasnt developed enough to curb risk taking. She is too, but she has tried to dodge the issue altogether until this bill AFAIK. And before anyone jumps on me, it isnt my thoughts. I know 30 yr olds who take stupid risks. I know very well adjusted 18 yr olds. I havent seen the data or any information about the samples used to draw the conclusions. |

I think its a stupid idea.
You can vote at age 18. You can go to war at age 18. You can use a deadly weapon (car) unsupervised at 17. If you can be trusted to do these things, why can you not be trusted to drink at 18? Premier Keneally, if you want the drinking age to be 21, go back to the US. |

I dont read the SMH.
Hardly changes the bill being introduced by an independent, or having support from the opposition, or being opposed by the Government. The exact opposite of your posts implication. Strange that you say you read it, yet posted what you did. |

So you didn't read the article? Or you did read the article but don't read SMH even though the article is on SMH.com.au. It was yet another carefully crafted beatup which you seem to believe is gospel. You really have not improved since your last time on here a few years ago..... |

Whatever it was, it was not a bill introduced by the government. The idea is not one of the government. It is a bill that has support by the opposition. If the sheriff changes, it is more likely to get up, than if things stay as they are. I also note, your habit of pushing a political agenda on a site that forbids it is still ever present. Im simply correcting your deliberate deception. Nay, outright lies. I couldnt care less who NSW votes for, I dont live there. Nice duck and cover by the way. Grow a pair. |

So you don't understand that these beat ups are just a lead up to the election. When you first came back I thought you might have something positive to contribute to the forum this time, maybe occasionally something about Fords even. But alas I was mistaken. Now get back under your bridge, there are billy goats coming....... |

You can die for your country at 18, so you can drink and vote then too.

sounds like the pollies justifing their job by making it look like thier doing something.
There is a golden rule. for every action there is an equal & opposite reaction. I think that most kids start drinking before 18 anyway so if they porbaly still drink & if they cant get the drinks maybe they will try other drugs instead. Thats whats been happening in the club scene when they made alcohol more expensive to kurb binge drinking. So they buy drugs like extacy instead. Instantly you get off your face for $20 instead of over $100 for grog. |
