Default Mick Fanning Unharmed in Shark Attack

Very lucky bloke - think the worst when you see him go under.

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/...-1227448371150

While I would like to think I would have reacted like his mate that paddled to his aid, truth is I probably would have made for the beach and then run further inland just in case the bastard grew legs.

Surely they've invented some kind of sonar device to keep them away by now ?

Sonar does work on sharks and it harms Dolphins/Whales.
Then someone tried jets of bubbles, but sharks swam through these.
Shark repellant not sure how useful it would be whilst surfing.

The one effective method is "shark" nets, and these work very well.

Unfortunately other marine creatures also get caught in the nets.

So now we have a bunch of people actively petitioning governments to remove the "shark" nets and these people have no issue exposing swimmers/surfers to shark attack risk, but heck at least the turtles are a little safer.

BTW, Fanning was very lucky!

And damn right too.

Swimmers and surfers know the risks. Don't like it don't go in the ocean, simple !

(and yes I swim and surf)

Shark nets are not guaranteed, they only disrupt patterns.

Shark shields are proven to work but surfers don't tend to use them, more divers and kayakers.

Why do people constantly get surprised when this happens??

You're going in to their territory, then getting crabby when you run in to one.. Makes no sense to me..

Then again, I also can't understand why you have to go kill a shark cos it "attacks" someone. I'd understand if they suddenly came on shore and started eating people, but hell, you swim on to its dinner table, what do you expect?

Absolutely spot on.
You wanna play on their dinner table, don't be surprised if you end up being their dinner.

Geez there are some absolute morons in this forum.
So, does everyone in Africa also deserve to be attacked because they live on the Lions' "dinner table"?
Does everyone in the Northern half of Australia deserve to be eaten by Crocs? Because they DO leave the water.

The only moron here is you, because you don't get it.

No one said the guy deserved to be attacked.
No one said anyone else deserves to be attacked.

The point is, the water is a dangerous place to be, don't act suprised if you're attacked by a shark.

Lucky bloke, but I believe the shark was being inquisitive rather than aggressive. In that neck of the woods those sharks are know to leap from the water after an attack from 'the deep'. Given their size vs the surfer it wasn't really interested in eating him. But it sure would scare the bejezus out of you.

Finally some rational comment on this entire overblown event.

The story got about the first five minutes on the national television news last night. The Courier Mail today described it as a 'horrific attack'.

Hello - Mick Fanning didn't require so much as a Mickey Mouse band-aid when it was all said and done. How the media managed to make this into an 'attack' simply beggars belief.

I have a great deal of respect for Mick Fanning and for his achievements, but this event was probably about as far removed from a shark attack as you could ever see. Yes the shark was right there and it could have had an entirely outcome had it been hunting - but it obviously wasn't. The shark bumped into his leg rope, flipped its tail and swam away, nothing more.

I guess that version wouldn't gain much media traction though . . .

Russ.

Great white shark bites though leg rope.

Not even close to being attacked.

Yeah OK...not sure what his problem is? Should have finished the event.

Gents, my comment is directed at the media spin, most definitely not at Mick Fanning.

A terrifying situation yes.

An attack - no.
