Default would you let your daughter...

would you let your daughter have her own Myspace and use MSN ect if she was 12 - 14 years old. Not being into it I dont really know how secure it is, what do you reckon?

My daughter is 13 and the answer is no - at this point.

I recommend you do get familiar with that sort of thing though, otherwise you will always be on the back foot with what they are up to.

Definatley no Myspace but MSN I would be cautious. If it were me, I'd block both and give her a prepaid mobile. She could still communicate with friends but no strangers communicating with her.

Lmao.

Comming from a 17 year olds point of view msn not a problem I've been using it since I was 12.

Myspace is just a website for 16 year old guys to put up topless photos of them selves and 16 year old girls to put up pantsless picutures of them selfs.

Both are safe as long as you teach them not to give out personal information to people you don't know.

LOL...thats probably not what they want to hear, but its the truth.

Myspace, what a waste of time. Nothing other than a place for people to make themselves feel better about themselves and crap on about how many friends they have, even though they have never met half of them.

You're a guy obviously, bit different for girls me thinks. My sister who is 18 has been using myspace for about 2 yrs and she still shows me some of the messages that guys well over 30 and 40 send her and its just not right. MSN isnt too bad it seems pretty safe dependss what type of daughter you have really

I am also 17 and I second that. Myspace may be a little too open but you can set your profile to private so no one except your friends, who you decide to add, can have access to it. msn you can only talk to peoples who have your e-mail address. and you can keep a track of ALL conversations on msn.

Edit: a couple of people beat me to it. I'm not a very fast typer.

Working in IT myself, I would say yes, if I had kids. The condition is that I would be standing over their shoulder watching what they do.

There was an article in today's Herald about the huge increase of Myspace predators.
Not to mention the associated garbage they will come in contact with.

My sister has just finished up a 12 month contract at the 'National Child Protection Clearinghouse", a gov agency that conducts research and prevention into child abuse, it has been very educating for our entire family.

You think you know what's going on, truth be told, we no jack sh!t !

I would NOT let any person under 18 years into any chat room such as 'My Space'

It is estimated that less than 20% of profiles on My Space contain honest and factual information.

All this = TROLL CITY....

sorta a cross between punk and gothic..... i wouldnt know though

theyre the ones that dye their hair black, usually have half their face covered with their long hair....some sort of black or dark clothing...sometimes alot of dark coloured make-up as well

theres nothing wrong with them, just in a way its like a religion they believe in something....others take it further - the extremists

The origanal emo is one who listens to sad depressing music and cuts them selfs.

Now days there's new types of what's considerd emo.

Growing a fringe that covers one eye or some outrages hair style
Dying hair black or 5 different colors
Listening to bands like "the spill canvas" or "Death cab for cutie"
3 or more peircings on the face.
Always wearing black..

Ect ect.
That's probably the best way to describe it to some one who doesn't know what emo is before all the young people here attack what i've just said.

Well, I'm proud to say mine's one of that "less than 20%" Everything's honest & truthful on mine, including pics of me being a drunken twat!

I must admit, I have a couple of under-18 guys added on my myspace, but they added me and I do actually know them outside of myspace through the Adelaide LANning community and regularly see them at these events. Plus Nathan & John from here added me after the AU Cruise, I think they're both 17. Its not like everyone out there is out for deviant purposes etc.

Did you explain your reasonings and thoughts behind it (or attempt to), or was it just a blanket "no"?

As an 18 year old and having used msn and myspace i'd say:

MSN: 15+
Myspace: 17+

MSN isn't bad, as it is up to the user whether or not they want people knowing stuff about them, although myspace if u accept another person then they are free to use whatever info is on your page.

I think making MSN/Myspace an 18+ thing is going a bit far, after all it comes down to the person using it. If your kids aren't even allowed to use MSN which is really quite minor compared to alot of real world activities, i guess you just don't trust them.

I've prob been using the internet to chat to friends since the internet existed - my parents told me don't talk to strangers or give out any personal details, which makes it quite safe. It's not as if teenagers are a high target for identity fraud or they have credit card details to be stolen.

I assume kids would be more likely to get up to more than they're spose to if the computer was in their room or something, so i'd probably have the computer in a family room where it can be seen what they're up to.

Those of you saying your kids aren't allowed to use myspace until 18 seems quite funny to me - don't you think its going a bit far? It seems to go in the category of parents not letting their kids eat tia maria Tim Tam biscuits because they contain alcohol, or letting them watch the simpsons because it sets a bad example... There's caring for your kids safety and there's not letting them experience life for themselves - big difference.

I wouldn't let my daughter on myspace because its full of tryhard ****ars. If she avoids a few pedophiles (spelling?) as well then thats a bonus.

EDIT: actually that should be around the other way.

im only 18 but i would allow msn more then myspace. i have guys in my tafe class that sit there lookin for hot chicks on myspace jus to perve at pictures.
fair enough they are hot but it shows how easy it is to get info on people.

hell iv had friends tell me a tiny amount about someone and within minutes i can tell them their address their phone number. often their school, their parents names, their friends. do it mainly to girl friends that are chatting up weird guys. so i do it to freak them out that i know more about the guy then them :P

as somone else mentioned. you can get routers or just little programs or even usb sticks that record everything. they can record every keystroke if you really want.
