Default Can anyone remember what plates where out in 70/71/72?

Does anyone remember, or have a Falcon with original plates that knows what lettering plates where in those years? Were they KKU, or KYU (e.g. KKU 123 etc.) or there abouts?

I'm guessing it would be earlier letters.

My 76 Datto on original plates had HXM... I remember someone telling me that each letter had a life of about 18 months to 2 years. So MAYBE you should have an E / F starting plate??

Going by the link posted by Boss-290 the plates KKU would date from late 1969. KYU dates from around mid 1971.

The ex Murray Carter XY GTHO race car has the KYU prefix numberplates and has a rego sticker for July expiry.

Hope this helps.

A mate had an XW (long gone now) with the rego number KSU450 and October rego expiry. This is from 1970 and right on the model change from XW to XY.

That'll be from very late 1971 or early 1972.

What have you got in mind?? Do you have an old car and looking for number plates from around the time it was first registered?

Had a 1970 HG Holden Ute that was KZH 588

Dad had a 1973 XB Fairmont that was LSD 870

But I had also had a 1976 Torana SS Hatchback that was IND 846, go figure that out!

I remember the Murray Carter XY having KYU as well.

Thanks for all the replies, appreciated.

Here in SA you can buy R or S series plates, which were the standard plates issued between 1966 and 1981 i believe, as re-issues direct from transport SA; so long as they haven't been registered in the past 5 years.

Can you do something similar in Vic? or would you have to get custom plates and customize them to look like they were made in 1972? or find someone with original plates, buy the rights and put them on your own car?

Silly questions

That database is not totally correct, I got a new set of plates from vicroads in Carlton in '89 or '90, CGW513, according to the database they would have been issued in '86!!!

maybe some different ones have got through, but our 84 xe had cey and i remember in around 89 was ea, because i saw an ea with eaY and i thought it was appropriate. from what i have seen with that data base, it seems very accurate for all the cars we have had - from 63 to 91
