Cops escorting Cold Chisel caught speeding
From: AAP November 30, 2011 11:14AM THREE police officers in Western Australia's southwest have allegedly been caught speeding while escorting Cold Chisel to their concert venue. A sergeant, senior constable and constable were sanctioned to escort the band to Sandalford Estate on Saturday when they were clocked by a speed camera. One officer on a police motorcycle was allegedly detected travelling at more than 45km over the speed limit on the Bussell Highway. Officers in two other police cars were also allegedly speeding. Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan's told the ABC there will be a full investigation into the incident, and all three officers will be interviewed today. My comment..why did Cold Chisel need a Police escort?????? surely thats a waste of resources????

Mate you should have seen the escort for Princess Mary on the Ring Road down here, they were not messing around.
As for CC, odd they need a police escort.

Is the police car going to be impounded and the driver to lose his licence under the hoon laws, or is it one law for us and one for them.
I don't consider police escorting Cold Chisel an operational reason to speed. There was no emergency and they weren't on their way to a criminal incident. |

Also says it all about the priorities of a society where some guys who stand there and play musical instruments can get a police escort at illegal speeds to a gig (well, actually, the truth is they got the police to chauffer them there in police vehicles by the story) and yet ambulances can ramp outside hospitals in thier dozens with critically ill people on board waiting for treatment and it's seen as normal...

Funny enough I commented about the V8 race utes being driven at high speed under escort through Townsville streets and was shot down in flames a few months ago... nearly everyone thought it was ok to do so.

"...Concert organisers asked police to escort band members from the Busselton Airport to Sandalford Estate because they were running late for the event, which was due to start at 5pm.
Police took the unusual step of agreeing to the request because they feared postponing the event could potentially cause problems with liquor licenses and with high school leavers who were in Margaret River celebrating the end of exams. Cold Chisel band members were inside two marked police cars that were accompanied by a marked police motorcycle. The convoy was driving on the Bussell Highway towards the winery when all three were flashed by a speed camera near Carbunup River in an 80kmh zone shortly before 4pm. It will be alleged the marked police cars were travelling at 110kmh and 116kmh, and the police motorbike was travelling at 129kmh – which could attract a reckless driving offence. While the officers had activated the police lights on their vehicles, they did not have permission to exceed the speed limit as they were not driving under priority conditions..." They were just after some Cheap wine...
![]() It is odd they needed an escort though...but then again, down south in WA to have any rock band come to town is a big thing!

Crush the car. Lose their licences for long time. There was no need for them to be doing 125+ in an 80 zone

yeah lets destroy tax payer funded vehicles just to prove a point.
then, we can have a 12 month investigation as to why it was neccesary, at the cost of the tax payers. wgaf, police cars go fast.

I doubt these officers' idea of good policing is chaufferring a clapped-out old has-been caterwauling Scotsman to his precious gig. Sounds like an administrative screw-up that left the frontline troops under pressure to take up the slack. Hopefully they don't get hauled over the coals for it (by the very bosses who ordered them to do the escort).
Hey does anyone remember Kyle Sandilands getting a police escort because he was worried about how other people drive? Then he laid a trail of rubber up the road in his rental Maserati while the police glumly plodded along behind him unable to do anything because they were under orders to escort him. |

Well maybe not crush a cop car, but these officers should be punished just like the average driver would be.

Meh, we know those in 'blue and whites' have their own rules.
There will be a minor investigation, it will be found they acted appropiately and prevented potential rioting, they will be awarded!

Hey, we had one drive around the boom gates in front of a coal train out here last year, giving the train drivers the fright of thier lives. This was after the Plod were drumming into everyone how dangerous doing such a thing was.
The local ABC radio did an interview with the head of the traffic branch, I think from Rocky, who explained that when on an emergency call, the road rules didn't apply to them at all. Probably fair enough...many years ago did 160kph in a 351 F100 Ambulance up the middle of Walker st in Bundaberg on our way to a serious multi-car crash. "What was the emergency may I ask?", said the ABC interviewer. The cop said they "had a report that some cars were approaching flooded road crossings on the "Beef road" heading north from Dingo. ABC lady hesitated, and said "So no one was actually stuck in flood waters, there were just cars in the area where the road was blocked off with road closed signs". There was another long pause, and the cop said "Well...the potential existed for there to be a dangerous situation occur..." Just admit it...your man in the car got all excited and decided to race a train. If he'd had flashing lights going we might have suspected he was on his way to an emergency, but he didn't. Next time he might not be so lucky and we might be picking bits and pieces out of the cow catcher... No "emergency" existed at all in the case of driving Cold Chisel to a concert. They're a bit late? So what? They cancelled concerts here in Queensland a while ago because Barnes was sick, and there were no riots. As with most things, if you are going to complain about other peoples behavior, you had better damn well make sure you're whiter than white yourself first...not tell us that "every K over is a killer" and then happily go more than 40k over the limit yourself for no good reason. Okay, yes it was wrong. Yes, in a way it was a waste of Police Resources.
For the record. The Bike officer will face hoon charges, the bike was taken, but as it was not his, it was returned to the owner. (as it is designed now after we had a few issues over here) The motorcylce rider does not own a vehicle that can be impounded. - Last I heard there was an order made for him/her to nominate another vehicle to be impounded for the 30 days. Police vehicle 1 and 2 will both be fined for their speed; as would any other driver. Why did it happen? There were fire road clousures nearby the venue due to the bush fires, the two cars and bike where on their way to the venue anyway to assist with crowd and traffic control etc. Someone had the bright idea to throw them in the cop cars. as they were all 'going that way'. As it turns out, it was not so bright. There is no hidden adgenda, there is no cover up. The officers involved are in a world of hurt.

Good grief, another rant thread.
Let it be people. There SHOULD be a process to allow safe rapid transit of VIPs on public streets at police discretion. Luke

At the end of the day cops speeding is a good thing. It serves to remind the public that the world doesn't come to an end at 10 over the limit.

Carbunup River is a small town with a fuel station and convenience store at a T-intersection on a curve of the Bussell Hwy. There are pedestrian caution signs on the approaches to the town. Visibility approaching the town is somewhat restricted by trees at the side of the highway and there is a narrow bridge just before the T-intersection.
This section of the highway is two-way, single lanes with double-lines extending almost the entire length of the 80k zone. There are also driveways from a local vineyard and properties entering this part of the highway so a close encounter with slow moving traffic or a pedestrian "shortly before 4pm" could have been a distinct possibility. The approach and exit speed-limits to/from Carbunup River are 110kmph... Carbunup River is only about 25kms from Sandalford Estate so even if they had driven at an average speed of 80kmph from Carbunup River, they would likely have arrived at Sandalford Estate by 4:30pm. If this is an example of a necessary or "safe rapid transport for VIPs on public streets", I don't think Police should get such carte blanche (and hypocritical) discretion. |

As previously stated, all three have been charged/fined.

Lucky they are all alive!! Govco always tells us speed kills!!! Just 5k's over makes the difference between a non fatal crash and a fatal.
What would the excuse have been if they had killed someone crossing the road in Cardanup River? Sorry, crap happens we have punished the officers involved by transferring them to Broome. |
