I have always woundered why ford and holden and i think pretty much every car maker has the exhaust exit on the same side of the car,ie ford is always on the drivers side and holden on the passengers side to name a couple.Does anyone know why this is so ?

Same as the fuel. We have 3 different makes so does become a pain to remember when fuelling up. So I have no idea why they do this either...

I guess you had a 50% chance of that happening.....
On the fuel - it is much better this way, petrol stations would be far worse if we all had to use the same side.

Unless it has dual exhaust, the fuel filler will be on the opposite side to the exhaust for safety, (fuel spill & splash onto hot exhaust). Exhaust side depends on the way the engine is configured.

If memory serves me correctly, the HQ Kingswoods had the intake and exhaust manifolds on the passenger side. In that case, it made sense to have the exhaust on the passenger side.
It was the same with the early Commodes, but with the VL, the intake manifold was on the drivers side and the exhaust on the passenger side. As for the boat anchor Commodes, they could have gone either way. What dictated its location was the fact that the VN-VR-VS were running the same floorpan as the VL (with the exception of the IRS models, I have no idea what happened there ![]() As for the Fords, the non crossflow motors had the manifolds on the drivers side, the crossflows as we all know are intake passenger, exhaust driver. |

And the fuel filler location should never be a mystery, as far as I know all newer cars have a little arrow on the fuel gauge pointing to the side the filler is located.

A trick I learned was to pull the fuel flap lever and then check the mirrors if I wasn't sure.

On Mitsubishi Magnas arrow is pointing the opposite way to where fuel filler is - arrow pointing right filler on the left. Due to instrument panel being designed for japanese market i think. |

As above, the exhaust manifold is on the drivers side on the I6 so thats makes sense, so (happy to be proven wrong of course) that probably results in structural changes underneath the car for it to fit that way and so they kept it the same for the V8's.
I'd prefer the fuel filler to be on the drivers side so that it takes less time to get to it. ![]() |

The arrow on the fuel gauge is a myth, My old 80 series cruiser proved that wrong, as did many other cars I drive for work every day

Fuel door should always be on the passenger side so there is no risk banging your door against the boser when exiting the vehicle. Common sense really....

The myth that all cars have the fuel gauge on the same side of the filler cap is the myth, while it does hold true for a lot of early Falcons

actually I stand corrected it wasnt the arrow but the little picture of the fuel bowser. Some used to say that whatever side of the bowser the hose and handle was on indicated what side of the car the filler was on. Thats not true
