Default A true Australian hero

i think people often throw around the term, "hero" like it is just another word. Sportsmen and celebrities being called hero's disgusts me. Cpl Ben Roberts-Smith, VC, MG is a true Australian hero, if you didn't see this on sunday night have a watch now.

Please keep all personal opinions about why we are in Afghanistan out of this, get behind your troops.

Agreed, a real hero.

Please find below a link describing the actions in which he was awarded the VC and MG.

http://defence.gov.au/special_events...mith/index.htm

Today also marks the 70th anniversary of the loss of HMAS Perth (alongside the USS Houston) during the battle of Sunda Strait.

Lest we forget.

I did catch this story and found him to be a very brave man. Agreed he fits the term Hero indeed.

Some idiot with more muscle than brain cells throws around a ball on a weekend for a living and is called a hero? Nope.
Some tool out-performs (in the most generalised sense) a bunch of other tools and gets on a "make me a star" TV show and is called a hero for his efforts? Nope.

Guy risks his life willingly in battle to save his mates and is called a hero? Nope.
Why "nope"? Because the word "hero" just doesn't seem big enough to describe the magnificence of this soldiers actions. Well done!

Yep, a man amongst men alright. But is that the VC he has tattooed on his chest? not sure about that.
Boy wouldn't he be a trophy for the Taliban, I hope he keeps safe, and everyone else over there too.

Unfortunatley for him, because the Government had to show his face (not something these boys ask for or really want), he will not be able to go out on patrol or do counter terrorism work again.

High Profile = High Risk.

I read a comment on a newspaper site that I reckon nailed it.
This seems to be the way Australia is heading in regards the need to bring people down. As they wrote, you wouldn't see a U.S. TV host bringing down a decorated soldier.

It's a shame our pathetic D grade 'celebrities' feel the need to show a lack of respect to men who lay their lives on the line. Even greater shame that they have an audience.

It's called 'The Circle' on Channel 10. Consists of a few women and a token male taking dribble.
I was going to add a couple more descriptions but thought better of it

Its a couple of over opinionated idiots pretending to be experts on everything.

Its no wonder Negus lost his own show, who would want to watch him and him alone? Its a disgrace that it wasn't recognised the good fortune that Ben Roberts-Smith and his wife had, being successful with IVF.

So dissappointing that people are that desperate for any publicity (Yumi Stynes and George Negus) that they feel they need to attack someone who has served this country so well.

We always underestimate things we don't know about. I've seen little kids' hands held by their parents as they walk up the mudguard of a beautifully restored pre-war Rolls Royce, I've seen valuable postage stamps discarded by children who had no understanding of the time and effort taken by their parents to acquire rare and valuable material, I've seen the studs on jeans scratch the paint on XY GTs.

I accept that this guy being judged on his looks and being described as stupid because of his looks in the interest of a cheap laught. It happens all the time.

What I look for now is genuine understanding from those who have caused offence to show that they have some appreciation of the sacrifice made by our armed forces. They were ignorant to say what they said, if they remain ignorant it is their choice and that is what I will condemn them for.

George Negus, I don't understand, he is old enough and experienced enough to know better. Some of his reporting and his writing on prejudice is the best I have seen. I am confused by his motivation.

A hero is someone who risks his or her own life to help others not some over paid moron throwing a ball around. these guys are playing their sport because they love it and to make big dollars, hardly the hallmark of a hero

I know most of us here don't like A Current Affair, but I liked their attack segment on The Circle tonight. What an absolute joke of a show and presenters.

yeah, AFF is much more mature!! no one on here would ever slander someone or make derogatory comments about someone they didn't know

so many hypocrites!!

as for the word hero - i believe there can be more than one meaning. to a 6 year old, someone like ricky ponting might well be his hero. sporting hero. too many 'heroes' get all hung up on pedantics.
