Been looking to buy a 4x4 diesel for the last 6mth's , what a mine field.
I suppose covid didnt help LOL. Ive seen a lot of low kms cars that look like they've done a lot more than what they state. A google search confirmed my suspicions!!! You can buy a plug in scanner that can adjust the kms for 400$ odd. Apart from honest use when installing a reco, why have manufactures aloud this to happen. I,m at a loss Last edited by steves6403; 21-01-2021 at 09:08 AM. Reason: spelling |

What plug in scanner can do that, and to what vehicle?

It was common for owners of classic Ferraris to disconnect the speedometer actually. |

A friend of mine went to the auctions and bought a v8 panel van. He was very excited as it only had 160kms on the clock. He brought it round as the electric windows weren't working and drivers side was down from when he bought it, easy fixed.
I put the window up to see an oil change sticker saying "next oil change at 320,000". He cryed |

If they've been used Off road or as Work Vehicles? It's quite possible that They've have Very Low Average speeds & High Engine hours relative to a Car that's spent most of It's life at Highway Speeds.. Whenever I'm Looking at a S/H Truck I always take Far more Notice of the Engines Hours than the Distance travelled.! |

Yeah Damo I think the 100 series & GU Patrol are the most recent 4wds where the clusters can be swapped and aren’t stored in the BCM. The Discovery 2 stores the cluster with the BCM but the LR Nanocom scan tool can change either or to the highest or lowest value. I looked into this as in NZ diesels pay $78 tax per 1000km. I ended up buying a Citroen C5 diesel and unplugging one of the rear ABS sensors, which is used as the VSS. Only downside is I lose cruise control. Last edited by GasoLane; 21-01-2021 at 01:12 PM. Common issue with early commodores, was easy enough to flick the first number around making a 180,000km car an 80,000kms car
I'm little skeptical with low km cars, any odo reading should be supported with the condition of the car, service history and other documentation I worked with a guy who had a VT GTS and the speedo stopped working at very low kms, he had her as a daily driver for 3 years and did abit of a skid in reverse one day, speedo started working again so he decided to sell her on lol |

Depends on where the car has been used, and what for. Most utes on the mines have extremely low k's. On some sites the u/g Utes are locked info low range.
But the dirt, mud, salt, and water kills them. They're a decent cheap buy when we're finished with them. Labour onsite is hugely expensive, so a Ute can become uneconomical to repair for us, but still be a Good buy for someone who's handy. But gees they are rough. I would imagine the engines are still good, but the bodies are cruddy and the running gear is usually cactus. |

Looks can be deceiving when buying a used car, some of the bad ones are tarted up to look good so it can be hard for joe average to tell what has been thrashed to within a inch of its life and what is genuine.
My son has a 09 BMW 328i with over 350,000 on the clock, the car looks and drives mint, even the paint is unmarked, you would swear it was a sub 100,000k car the way it drives, previous owner looked after it like crazy, on the other hand my 2010 4x4 Fuso Canter has 55,000ks on it, fortunately mechanically its great, but at the moment it looks like its been driven to the moon and it got bogged there (ex mine vehicle) looks more like a 550,000k truck with the red mud dyed interior, the chassis is so bad I am 1/4 the way into doing a chassis swap. |

![]() But I have a few cars so ive only done 80k in the last 7 years, not sure i'll get to the million anytime soon... plus the original cluster isnt in it anyway , it was scratched up and the push thing broken so I changed it. Original cluster was a bit over 720,000 when removed. Have clocked up 80 on the wrecker replacement. No intention of selling this car, still have the orig. cluster anyway and could swap the plastic cover and fix the reset button i suppose. |

I have changed instrument clusters before, only because of failure, have had the ks adjusted to the original k's of the car its going into by Speedline instruments in Wangara, had a cluster with 400,000+ ks adjusted back to the 135,000 that was on the car it went into.
All of this is not illegal to do, but to not tell the next owner is though I just put a brand new cluster in my 2010 Fuso, so it currently reads 105 ks ![]() |

There was a rort in France some years ago, if you bought a vehicle for commercial purposes (more tax benefits IIRC) after a fairly low mileage/time threshold you could re-register as a private vehicle and keep or sell. It was economical enough to buy some types of car, park them up several months and then flick the speedo forward. I understand it was almost done to order!

Not too hard to find as it seems they would be in plenty of OS cars.
