Hello all, I would like to remove my rear bumber and fix it up as I have the usual rear bumper droop off to one side (left in my case) that seems to be all too common on EA and EB series cars. I was just wondering if anyone had removed their bumper and how they did it, and help would be greatly appreciated as I'm not a fan of the droopy bumper.
Also, how would I go about painting it? Sorry one last thing, is it hard to replace a cracked dash(i.e. the mouldiing that goes all the way across)? Last edited by brax; 04-07-2005 at 09:37 PM. |

Bumper removal - remove boot plastics and fold boot carpet back, remove the 4 bolts (2 each side) in the boot near the tail lights, remove mud flaps/screws holding the black plastic splash on either side, push bumper all the way forward to remove it off plastic clips keeping sides held to car, then pull bumper back and off the car (remove tow bar tounge first if you have one).
Painting it, unless you have a compressor and alot of paint, get a qoute. Cracked dash, get a dash mat is the easiest way to solve, otherwise its a complete dash removal then swap of everything to the new dash shell (uncracked of course) then a re-install not a fun job although fairly straight forward and will take most of a day.

I actually painted mine using those touch up cans you get a supercheap. Believe it or not it turned out great. 1x700g can plastic primer, 3x375g cans colour (did 6 coats), 2x375g cans clear, cut and pollish. First I sanded with 400 grit wet&dry, put on plastic primer, put on colour with 1200 grit sand between coats, put on clear with 1200 grit between coats, cut and polish. Gave a great finish and matches the orriginal paint brilliantly. When using cans make sure you bleed the first bit out of the can and leave a bit (about 1/10) left, otherwise the paint can tend to come out in big drops rather then a spray (looks like someone got a mouthfull of paint and spat on it).

I got a whole new bumper a while ago because I was rear-ended at some traffic lights. The Hilux that hit me was wrecked ($8000 worth of damage). I got away with a dint under the left taillight and had the left corner of the bumper pushed down by a couple of centimeters. ($900 - I have a towbar) The point I am getting at is that we couldn't refit the bumper to get it straight. All the inside of the bumper was crushed which was why it was drooping. The Hilux driver's insurance covered a brand new bumper, as well as the dint.
