Dragging... 'Power' or 'Eco'

hey guys,

when i want to drag at the lights or anywhere really from a standing start, do you guys suggest 'power' or 'eco'

i always use 'power' however iv been reading that the falcon I6's are strongest in 2nd gear and above, not first gear

so would it be logical to drag in 'eco' so you reach second gear quicker?

I found it to be quicker using 'power' because although you hold on to first longer, you also manage to hold second gear longer.. not the case with 'eco' which shifts into third quite swiftly (in my car anyway) Hope this helps

I dont understand why people need to keep asking this question.....
AT Wide Open Throttle, the Auto shift points are ALL THE SAME! therefore ECO or POWER makes bugger all difference really.

Shifting 1,2,3 is stupid becasue its no good for the tranny if you shift too late and you tag the limiter a few times before the second or two delay between changes is over, and that will get you nowhere.

I assume were dragging at calder? lol Of course....

EDIT: For those who think that I dont know nothing cuz I drive a Fiesta. My first car was an Automatic XG S pack Ute, and I didnt ever touch the button dragging or not, and it NEVER MADE A DIFFERENCE!

Not true, it still does hold on to gears longer at WOT although the difference isn't as big as 40-80% throttle.

Power mode should give you quicker times especially if you have a few mods like exhaust and extractors which help power up high.

I'd like to hear from someone who knows more about it. I was under the impression from some people in the know that at WOT there is not any difference. Its also what I experienced driving mine.

Yeah there isn't a huge difference at WOT as you can see by the specs below but it still has some effect, the major difference is under partial throttle. These are the ford specs:

100% Throttle
Shift / Economy (kph) / Power (kph)
1-2 / 65 / 69
2-3 / 109 / 114
3-4 / 160 / 162

40% Throttle
Shift / Economy (kph) / Power (kph)
1-2 / 28 / 48

off the line i dont think it makes any difference, u can solve lots of power problems with a manual

YET ANOTHER EDIT: I should have said that I never touched the power button after the first few experiments with it and realising that at WOT that it in fact did nothing for performance.

i heard if your flogging an auto in economy, u'll shagg the gear box. i got a few mate's who have lost 2nd gear due to thashing it round in eco. cause it holds the gearbox back.
i just leave it in power unless im keeping it under 2 grand. not worth it for a(i think) two tanks a year saving.

have never touched the button, my car doesnt even have it!! But my old EB2 (wagon) was in power whenever dragging but that thing was sooooooooooooo slow

thats pretty wrongs guys.... i think that in power mode it allows your engine to rev out more and shift at a higher rpm which means in the next gear u will have a greater advantage because you will hit the 2nd gear where your power is about to peak....therefore if u drive using eco you will lose time by the time ur 2nd gear power kicks in...you would have changed gears too early....therefore....using the gears on an auto you can stall it to about 2000rpm off take offf rev it out completely and shift at a greater rpm and gain a quiker time in the fact that you will be using all the top end power of the ford 4ltr....

well back in my auto days i can tell you that power mode holds the gears longer when you accelerate (not at wide open throttle). otherwise if you floor it off the line, their is no difference if its in power mode or economy

Guys the only thing that power mode allows you to do over eco is rev out the gears longer thats alll....instead of shifting gears at 3500rpm wif eco it shifts gears at 5000 rpm....

ps if you actualy care silicon chip have a kit available that makes it possable for you to pick your shift points/patern thats if it be an electric box aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii send me a post if you want details but yea get a manual and be done with it.

I actually noticed a difference when i went WOT off the line in PWR mode compaired to ECO mode, thats cause my TPS's were flogged and the car thought it wasnt at WOT :P LOL

Just leave it in PWR mode, its better for the auto ;)

I can't vote, cos I drive a manual and have never driven a car withna power/economy switch to see if it makes any difference.

But I'd say, sell that auto, and do a manual conversion.

Power mode also shifts down at a lower throttle position than eco mode. If your driving i second gear and for example you put you foot half way down, it'll kick back into first in power mode, while in eco mode you'll need to put your foot 3/4's of the way down before it shifts into first. (this is just an example, i'm not saying that it does shift down at half throttle etc...)

well my ED's gear box is kind of weird:P

if i put it in 1-2-or 3 it will shift thru gears as if it was in drive

in eco it will spin it's wheels off the line at full throttle
in power it won't spin it's wheels but sticks to gears for long and takes a while to shift (almost like it gets stuck in 1st until i let go of the accelerator and depress it again)

i personally drive in eco since i recently realised it seems to give it better performance but it could just be me... i don't know...

Its just you tommi, and if your wheel spinning off the line in eco mode, you need new tyres :P
