Hey just interested in what i would need to buy or find to convert my ed fairmont auto to a 5spd.
Bearing in mind i wouldnt be able to manage any of the work myslelf, so how much for all the parts and how much do u reckon for a tranny place to do it or somewhere that will do it will cost all up, im thinking of finding all the parts and then getting someone with a bit more knowledge to do all the work Cheers |

Bearing in mind that fact that you have a fairmont, some of the options like trip computer and stuff like that run off the computer. Ford didn't make a manual fairmont, so you won't be able to get a computer for one. You can however, trick the computer into thinking your car is in park/neutral so you can start it and it often doesn't run too badly. That's something you will need to think about though.

Wrong on all points. They did make Manual Fairmonts (vary rare though) Correct the trip computer gets the info from the ECU, but all ECUs are compatible with the trip computer, doesnt matter if its a GLi or LTD. And the other stuff you're talking about (I assume Climate and other Fairmont luxuries) is again not related to the ECU, its controlled by the BEM. So what im saying is ED GLi ECU can run in a DC LTD and vise versa. XR6 was only slightly different, but is still compatible. Obviously V8 ECUs ae different and are not compatible with 6s. A manual ECU is desirable for a conversion, but not essential.

Do it mate, my brother in law did his ED fairmont. Also, the trip computer will work on a GLi ECU manual or auto.

$2500 here. all parts seconhand except for clutch and clutch cable. fully installed by my mechanic. its a bit more exxy cos i bought a manual ed xr6 ecu which are rare as hens teeth these days. would be about 2200 if i just did the auto ecu mod.
i cannot recommend it enough as well. it honestly changed the whole car. like when people say 'its a whole new car' it really is. the driving dynamics change so much for the better. |
