what is the difference between the gli, futura and the fairmont, which would you buy and what would you pay for each?

Well Gli is the base model, Futura is next up (with colour coding, rear head rests, frone power windows) and Fairmont is next (with full electrics, etc). Finally there is Fairmont Ghia which has everything.
There is more detail in differences but this is a rough guide. If I were to buy one, it would be a Ghia.

And as for price, the condition of the car is a much bigger factor than what model it is in. Though of course, Fairmonts are usually better maintained. I'd do a search on autotrader, carsales etc for an idea of current value in your area.
The most important differences are in safety features. All have a driver's airbag and seatbelt webbing clamps, the Futura and up have ABS, and a big keyhole-shaped passenger airbag was optional on the series II - bar the Ghia which had it standard. |

You'll also find insurance to be far cheaper with the lower models (GLi) as compared to the more luxury models (fairmont ghia).

if i had the time again, i wouldn't bother with a futura, and i'd go straight for a fairmont or ghia, especially with how cheap you can have them for nowdays.
the luxury stuff (especially if you plan on modding in the future) is so much better to start with as a base. EFII Ghia - tickford enhanced - best bet! ;)

Personally I wouldn't go for anything less than the Futura, the extra features they have over the GLi (standard cruise, ABS, front power windows, clock, colour coded front and rear strips, 6 speaker stereo, etc) just make the Futura that bit more liveable than the GLi.
The Fairmont is pretty good value as well, but the Ghia's value is still often fairly high, because the leather trim and Tickford drivetrain are desirable (I wanted a Ghia for a long time, but couldn't afford it, so I just recently bought a Futura). We now have 2 EF's here, both Futuras

My vote is for an EF series II or EL Fairmont Ghia and also try for a V8, you might spend more up front on the purchase, but you'll spend less upgrading the interior and exterior.
