Question Economy

Hey guys,
I've noticed that there are loads of performance figures on here but not much on the E-Series economy.

How economical are your cars with fuel?

I drive mine pretty sparingly (3 or 4 times a week) and over last 12 months got
11.8L per 100km (25% Country, 75% City Driving) running on PULP.

There's not much on e series economy because its not something most of us like to talk about They're normally pretty bad on juice. I think the factory spec were 12.5L/100km for an EB and 12L/100 for an EL. Now the cars are getting older they're probably worse on fuel.

Best I ever got was 550km on a tank all highway cruising (not a completely empty tank though) and maybe get 450km for city/highway mix.

The economy you're getting for mainly city driving is damn good.
I get 15l/100km city and 13L for a 50/50 mix. Been trying to get around 12l/100km for city driving ever since I got it.

I've done everything I can to improve it while keeping stock specs, advancing dizzy, changing plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor, servicing the gearbox, fuel and air filter, using injector cleaners, keeping tyre pressure up etc.
Recently I changed the whole dizzy, I haven't filled it up since then, but put in $40 and that got me almost 300km, so maybe it goes further than 450km on a full $75 tank now

Not sure about the figures from my EL, but they're a lot better than my XF was. It was a stock S pack but even rebuilding the carby didn't make it great with fuel. Granted, the EL chews just as much when you bury the loud pedal, but more sedate driving sees a tank last me 2-3 weeks as opposed to the XF lasting 1-2.

I recently got 600km out of a tank of Optimax in my EL V8. 98% highway driving sitting on 120 the whole trip.

Ive noticed in the e-series cars ive owned is that any eseries with an automatic = bad economy. Put a manual shift in and u'll get decent economy. Keeping the ignition and injectors serviced helps ALOT also.

Ive found if I have a manual the temtation is too much & i tend to hold it in a low gear for longer & have a bit of fun & give it a bit more of a bootfull than an auto.

Nah manuals are worse because its too tempting to give it more revs, in an auto you can quite happily putt putt along but i find when driving manual i'm forced to give it more stick :

Oh, and for the record, V8 auto + 4.11s is giving me "10.8L/100kms" (I suspect this is incorrect) and approx 450kms to a tank

Anyhoo I don't have economy in mind with it comes to my car, otherwise I'd have a good 4.0 on gas, luxo-barge stylez.

Was going to start a new thread but ran a search and this came up. My fuel eco is getting worse and worse each week. At the start of the year i was getting about 370k's per tank, 5 months since then and its now sitting at around 320k's per tank. Considering a full tank in Melbourne these days is setting me back around $60-$70 its burning the pocket a little.

In the last 4 months ive had done both maintance and mod wise:

-Rotor button, dizzy cap, leads, plugs.
-Flush out of injectors
-New Dizzy coil
-Pacemakers and 2.5" system

Whats the answer? Ive been told to cleane my injectors, change o2 sensor, and checke fuel lines etc.

Any advice would be great!

Paul

Add a dyno tune (not just a power run) to that list ;)

I just put a trip computer in mine yesterday. On the highway it is down to 11.3 but around town it gets about 16.5 l/100k.

You all must drive them pretty hard, mostly country driving my new ef says 9.7 L/100 avg, sits around 6-8 on relatively flat road, up to 10-12 up a hill. This motor is standard so when the headers go on, it should get even better.
No way in hell would a manual use more fuel than an auto, even if trying to drive like Ambrose.

I agree, mine was a fuel pig when it was an auto and it didn't have half the mods it does now.

I'm getting on average between 12-13L/100km since I bought my EF, with mainly highway driving, though. My dad frequently gets 10-10.5 with his, though (both auto S1 Futuras).

An average tank for me is 520-550km, my best is 573km (surprisingly on ULP, with really light right foot, about 11.5L/100). Filling up once a week, it is a pain in the on a student budget.

However, I haven't fixed the high revving problem mine has (doing 1900 at 100km/h, dad's does about 1700), and I've heard all types of reasons, from diff, to auto box, to leaking intake manifold, etc.

If I can get it down to 11L/100km with my normal driving, and 10L/100 with light footed driving (I do a fair bit of highway), I'll be happy, I used to get 10.5-11L/100 from my old Pintara.

My EB when i had it used to sit on 16.5L/100. Didnt matter if i spent the week just driving in traffic, or mixof country stuff and city, 16.6.

Best i ever got it down to was 14.7, geelong and back.

My ED Fairmont Ghia usually gets 13.2-13.3 in Sydney which gives me an average travelling to and from work about 540km to a tank on just standard unleaded fuel which i think is pretty good for a e-series falcon i believe, totally stock as well at the moment...

My best was 850km/s with about 4 letres remaining. All freeway driving at 100km/h. This was in my old ED - with a cam exhaust and intake done. The trip consisted of:
Werribee --> Whittlesea --> Just past Lakes entrance. Plus some trips to work and back.

I generaly got about 10.5l/100kms, but if i drove it hard it would go anywhere upto 14-15l/100kms after a week.

Still dunno what the EL gets tho.
