Question New LCD screens...Ummm??

Looking to get 2 LCD screens for home to replace 51cm CRT I've had for ages.
So what are the magic numbers / mim specs I should be looking for?
I was toying with getting sonmethink that I can also use as a TV
so wide screen and 19' at least.

Default AHhhh!!!!

This is driving me nuts...!!!: :

I went to the markets at North Rocks today.
Looking at the various 19 and 20' wide screen monitors I cam across a guy who had a 4:3 next to a wide screen (both 19'). Bugger I was going to get the wide screen but i made the point of standing there for about 10 minutes looking at both. I found it really hard to look at the wide screen.
I am so use to my 21' CRT (4:3) the wide screen looks smaller.
I'm now back to the drawing board looking for a 4:3 format with DVI inputs

AHhhh and I thought this would be simple

ken, 2 screens depend on graphics card and whether its 2 idientical screen or half each or extended desktops

specs are in most widescreens 5ms respsonse most are 3yr warranty also look for dead pixel warranty (some wont tell you but its better to find out then have a dead pixel in the middle of the screen ey??)

DONT get a tv one if you want quality in your games and programs that require detail....the tv ones cant put out the same resolution as the computer ones

if you got DVI get a screen with dual analogue and DVI or just DVI there is a difference again in quality

then widescreens suck when playing games....alright with movies price wise not really that much worth it... you do gain in width but lose in height basically depends on what its gonna be used for

are you talking about computer screens or big LCD's?????

you need them all side by side

Benq - Forget, they make fast screens 4ms and 2ms (i think) but who the hell can see that we stop at 15ms or 12ms 2 aint no dif from 4

LG - on par with samsung slightly better though

Viewsonic - back in the day pixel warranty was anywhere any at all was fixed or replaced dont no about now good quality picture though

Samsung - id definently buy again, specs and price is still on of the best and quality well i can autocad, msn chat, watch HD movies and play games at full graphics and im happy with the results

Sony - always gonna be overpriced but quality is there though i think they live on their name now not quality

Acer - good value for money dont expect much more for the price

Asus - havent seen them in person, heard they are the bomb

Hercules - costs more than Sony's quality well for the price tag youd hope so

obviously it will come down to size, price, DVI vs analogue and work vs pleasure
they pretty much all have 8ms response standard now, 3 yr warranty standard (may change like the TV's), contrast ratios are around the 1400-3000~:1

shop online is usually the best way, and NO warranty does not need to be taken up through the supplier most times, most times theres a service agent in town.

oh dont get built in speakers...they cost more, speakers are crap, more goes wrong

Oh I beg to differ, play a racing game on an 8-10ms screen and then play that same game on a 5ms screen

Now play that same game again on a CRT and tell me responce time dont count.

Thanks for this
Ok to clear some points up
I need two screens but for two computers ( I do run a dual screen setup at work but I don't really need that at home)

The response time interests me, the lower it goes the more you pay but am I better of getting a higher response time but more connections (VGA, DVI etc)

I am running a 22" widescreen 5ms response with dual input(digital and analogue) all for under $550. It also has a 3 year warranty.

The brand is CHIMEI and the model No. is CMV 221D

This company recently got a contract to produce screens for DELL and their lower quality units sell as Polyveiw.

One problem with larger screens is they need more graphics power to run at their native resolution.

Was this the one reviewed in APC recently?

I have dual SLi cards at the moment but the 15yr old only has a 128mg AGP card in his computer.

never buy based on magazine reviews, you never know whos paying who

sli cards will give you the ability to use 4 screens (i think...not sure)

DVI/analogue is only the way of sending signal to monitor DVI is better than analogue .... bit like HDMI without the audio as aposed to RGB

4ms is nice but **** factor only....i doubt youd notice it since our eyes recognise 12ms or 15ms
so stick to 8ms or 5ms since they are pretty much standard

i still go by you get what you pay for....but some no name or un heard of brands are just as good... check www.umart.com.au for some prices then maybe check www.tomshardware.com for a REAL review of the screens

if its 80 or 90% gaming i suggest 2000:1 contrast ratio - you'll thank me when you play a game thats pitch black, 8ms or 5ms, if you got cards in sli then youd have DVI so get a screen with DVI

as for the tv part just get a good quality tv tuner - better than a tv screen (better res in comp monitor), able to record and most are High def so u could also use them as a settop box

hope that helps

The BEST bang for your buck LCD is a 24" (or 30") DELL.
It is wide screen and retails for about $1300.
I run a computer company and have the ability to buy any other brand wholesale, but all the reviews I read said the Dell was the best.

Forget about dual screens as most games will not work or crash. I had 2 x 19" Sony LCD's and changed them for the Dell as I had nothing but trouble with the duals at home.
We do however run dual's on all the work PC's as it makes life much more productive.

TV LCD/Plasma - can't go past the LG 42" Plasma SD screen with inbuilt HD tuner. Around $1600-1700. Bargain!

For PC, almost any LCD is better than CRT for general computer work, movies etc. Not sure about games - who has time to play any??? Mine is a 17" HP screen - got it second hand for $180 and it's been great. It's a standard 4*3 screen (not widescreen)

Thanks JC

I'm in two minds to try and get two roles out of the screens. 80% of the time it would be for computers use (moslty online games for the 15yr old (WWW) and equal share for mine (web design, off line PC games and Ford Forums of course) and 20% (maybe) as a TV.

HDMI, didnt think it was possible on a computer card??? though i havent done my research on the new stuff.

though DVI/HDMI converter will help in going comp to LCD/Plasma (HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED in plasma...thank XP's task bar for that, even auto hide has a small line across the bottom)

if HDMI is an option GET IT it makes a huge difference in clarity especially high def things .... cables are around $60 from me not the highly marked 100+

just remember anything High Def thats burnt to DVD will still only be SD because of compression and playback unless HD is supported....that includes those HD camcorders
but if stored on a HDD its HD only when compressed it becomes SD unless you got bluray or HD DVD

when you find something your gonna go for tell us and the price as well, might be able to help you out with the prices as well

good luck

The CMV (chimei) 221D 22" lcd monitor is an Excellent screen, a few of my friends have one and I can personaly vouch for the excellent quality, and for $473 you can't go wrong.

All this crap about games not working in widescreen is really unfounded .. sure if you wanna play games from 1990 go ahead, widescreen is gunna be a hassle. If it's even remotely new, and doesn't support widescreen, there are many many ways to get around it.

TigerDave.com forums
Widescreen Gamer
just to name a few

And if for whatever reason you decide to buy an LCD monitor with a 12ms responce time your dooming yourself to motion blur hell.

Have you, yourself, done this test?? I have, and can conclusively say that YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE. Play a driving game on a 12-15ms monitor and then go and try a 5ms one. It's chalk and cheese.

no i havent but then i wouldnt buy anything above 8ms, though 8ms and 5ms has virtually no difference.

figure out a size and specs you like, then compare from there.... 8ms vs 12ms doesnt just end there..contrast ratios, resolutions, DVI VGA and so on

as for the 1600 benq ... he could have bought a top range card and 2 screens, seen the vagina in High def and surround vision???? for less

This is one I found on the net by way of example re HDMI card
http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/produ.../145image1.jpg

A few new LCD's have showed up at work so I think I'll bring some home for a test run of the home computer to see how it looks to me in the room I will have them in.

I guess its like buying that first Plasma, you are never quiet sure if you've got the right one. Will keep the this thread active as I come closer to making a selection.

I'd just done an PC install for someone. They'd bought a 24 inch BenQ screen for $1600. It's only just been released but it's really too wide for PC's for my liking, but the fella says to me, "The vagina's look bigger".
