How not to pull out in front of a Semi

This is the remains of a caravan that pulled out in front of a Semi last Wednesday in Horsham .The Semi driver is one of our members here Full Noise.

Thanks for your comments guys, everyone is OK. It was an extremely lucky day for all involved here. The gentleman with the caravan pulled out from a side street without looking and I just had to do my best to miss his car. I was carrying 42,000 litres of diesel fuel and all up weighed 56 tonne. There was also another car at the intersection waiting to pull out that copped the full brunt of the caravan's interior. I never thought a bar fridge would go so far. The frustrating thing about this is that it could have all been avoided with a simple sideways glance. It is a very wide road with no obstructions to visibility in either direction, fortunately I was only travelling at 50 kph and not 60 as this is a 60 zone. It probably would have made the difference between hitting the car and not just the caravan. I cannot praise the Police and emergency services enough as they did a marvellous job and were very understanding at the scene.

Good stuff Danny. It's always good when everyone gets out okay. Won't stop the current media rubbish about truckies though.

For everyone who wants to bag truckies you should know that over 80% of fatal accidents involving trucks are NOT the fault of the truck driver.

but isnt it fun when people pull numbers out of there ****...

a few years a go:
"of 830 persons killed in crashes involving trucks, truck driver speeding contributed to make 130 casulties, truck driver fatgue to 70 and insecure loads to 15."

thats already over 30% not to mention

then you have the single car (truck) accident, which truckies were deamed at fault 92% of all the cases, with well over half of those being fatal...

and other miscellaneous reasons- drugs, non fatal crashes etc....

ill think that if you get your fact right truckies are at fault for almost 50% of FATAL crashes involving trucks

DISCLAIMER: as the first sentence of this post states i WAS NOT having a go at truckies, there are alot out there that do the right thing, these are the facts that i know - dont delieve me if you wish.

G’day Barry V, as far as I know the vehicle maintenance is carried out in-house. It could have been an Adelaide based vehicle that was in your workshop, however, I did bring the 904 that I drove for my last boss in once. Thanks again guys for your kind words.

but in real life the percentage is much more than that....

Jeez mate you done alright to pull a loaded double up without to much damage. It shits me when people pull out and you need to jump on the skids so you dont hit them, it's one thing to do it to a car that is capable of braking suddenly or getting out of the road bt a B double, thats just nuts. The amount of people i see who just pull out in front of trucks or shoot out in front to only need to brake at red lights is amazing and they wonder why they get hit.

Just after chrismas one of our qld subbies pushed 4 cars into the middle of an intersection, a ute jumped in front of him while he was trying to pull up for a red light and once he locked it up it pushed all the cars from both lanes into the middel of the intersection. Worst part is the ute was trying to pull into a driveway at 7ok's and expected the truck to pull up.

I feel for ya Full Noise!! I dive trucks also, and if you could have a dollar for everytime a loser pulls out in front of you regardless, fully loaded or not, you would be a very well off man!

Just yesterday I was driving beside a semi- not loaded- down a very long steep part of Springvale road in Vic.
As we got to the intersection down in the valley of this road an old man in a piece of shit falcon wagon - probably in his 80's pulled out from the intersection about 50 meters infront of the semi (who was doing at least 80 downhill).

I actually dont know how he pulled up without taking this stupid old man out, but he did!

if it was in my lane, there is NO WAY i would have been able to pull up in such a short distance, i was fully loaded!

There has to be more public awareness about this problem, being on the road all day driving, you really notice how bad some people are at driving!!

Would be good to have photos to show that bloke what COULD have happened if YOU were speeding on that day!
Might shake them up a bit, and they might learn rather quickly not to pull out willy nilly!

I meant the figures you posted, I dont know where you got 130% from 830 deaths and 215 with explained reason.

I don't know where the quote came from but I'd like to know where the figures are that suggest 'in real life the percentage is more than that'. Fact is the figures I have provided are based from published data. They count all death accidents and closely analyse the CAUSE of the accident.

The ammount of times i see cars pull in front of trucks so they're not behind them at a red light is crazy.
Light already red, cars speed up, change lanes/get in front and hit the brakes.
That sort of thing must make it so hard to judge your stopping distance.
Unfortunately it will take until theyre pushed into an intersection to stop doing it.

i give trucks as much room as they need (i mean think of the times when trucks r courtesy towards cars ie they pull over to the side of the road if its holding up traffic. its only fair to show the same back by not cuttn in on them).

i dont b a ******** to em coz i know that its easier for cars to stop than a truck (ive heard that trucks have 75% braking capability of a car-dunno if its true or not but id expect the weight of the things would b sumthn to go by). i was watchn today tonight sum time and sum ******** pulled straight out on a truck from street side parking. lucky the truck was doin the speed limit and HE WAS watchn the road. sum ppl r stuuuuupid.

glad to hear everyone is alright. bet it will teach them not to pull out again. they were lucky the lived to learn the lesson

It’s something that happens every day, you just have to make allowances for other people and always look for a way out when approaching any intersection. I’ve even had people stop in front of me at green lights, not sure of which direction to turn.

I too have seen cars do the most stupid things in front of trucks ........ not only biggies like Doubles & trains but also smaller rigids ..... I have my MR licence ....... Its amazing how stupid people can be .........

My father was in the game for years & so was my ex husband ............. My father never used anything & drove to the law ...... the other one ... well ...... lets say I have seen the worse side of this industry & it aint pretty :(

i had a full lot of stuff to say ,but i deleted it, it was a bit agro ,glad it turned out ok full noise. ill just say that those that look at statistics but actually dont know much shouldnt critisize, if those people drove our highways for a little while they would have some respect for people who do a difficult job.

Thanks Mik, your comments are appreciated. It was an extremely difficult day, at first I thought the worst for the passenger in the car as they were both elderly. It’s a horrible feeling when you think you’ve killed someone and knowing that it isn’t your fault doesn’t make it any easier. There are probably many others on this thread that also agree with you.

Glad no one was hurt, hope the guy with the caravan learns a good lesson out of it.

I wouldn't trust half the statistics anyway. They aren't consistant with what they base their 'facts' off. I bet they claim a truck running up the **** of some guy who pulled in front of them while they were already under heavy brakes coming up to the lights as the truckie's fault.

Shit Danny, glad your ok mate. What a mess, i hate driving cab over trucks for that reason, you have to love the nose on the 904 compared to the 104 wouldnt you ?
