Default How have people quit/left their jobs?

Hey i was looking at the verison thread and got me thinking, how have people left or quit their jobs? Was it on good terms or bad terms where it near ended in a fight?

Shaun

I worked at a phone repair place.

I asked for more pay twice. They denied me saying that they needed to look at the budget and that I needed to be more efficient at my work. I was already one of the most efficient workers there since I output alittle more than everyone and my return rate was one of the lowest. I was holding back my output actually because I didn't want to be scores above everyone else.

Anyway, they denied me. A higher position came up, I applied for it and didn't get it because they said I was always too vocal about procuring better tools for better efficiency and a safer workplace. Apparently getting better tools to make more money for the company and company safety is a bad thing.

I got fed up with them for not wanting to hear my ideas on how to improve the place so I got another job that paid twice as much. I was on 27k at that job... new job paid 51k. When I quit, they tried to counter offer but when I told them how much the new job paid, they said they couldn't match it and wished me best of luck.

Thats a good one, at least you are now on the right track and also getting more.

Im sorta in the same position at work and am also getting fed up with it, Im the only worker at my work Mechanical Engine Reconditioning and have been told i cant get anymore then my current wage (which i wont say) because get this their is no money in this trade.

Now this is my problem the engines that i build arent stockers and some come in at a fairly high price and still no money in this trade. I understand there is overheads and accounts and things but the amount of money i see flashed around on things and that, there is money in this trade but they dont want to part with it.

I started and completed my Apprenticeship at this place and am now the only 1 there i expect more for the work that i do.

It's always good to leave on good terms if possible, even if you arent entirely happy

I left my last boss to start my own business up, there were a few things I werent happy with (and 1 bloke) and wasnt sure how to tell the boss, but worked out fine in the end.

Still catch up every now and then, he invited me to last years xmas party and send porn via email!

Obviously they have respected you and you enjoy your job there, the best thing would be just be honest and say what you're thinking of doing (or are doing)

If they have dramas getting someone else maybe the most you could do is give as much notice as possible to make it easier on them. I was a foreman at my last job, and also was the main machine operator, but gave them nearly 2 months notice and trained some of the young blokes up to do more of the work

Well when i leave my job im gonna do the right thing and give notice so it should be on good terms from my end, it just depends on how they take it because they wont have any workers to back me up, should i care about this or is it their problem?

Shaun thats their problem not yours. If they ask you to maybe stay on until they can arrange some new employees etc to fill the gaps it would be a good thing to do it, but otherwise whatever happens after you give your notice is not your problem.

Im trying to find something first so i dont leave and have no income, in the situation im in now my finances will fall quick and couldnt live on holiday pay for long. So if i have another job i would be required to start that so i would give them the notice and then wouldnt be able to stay and help out.

Surely they didn't use that as the reason. Your friend could take them to court for unfair dismissal for sure.

They found out he was planning to open his own business and called him in & asked if it was true which he told them it was, so they said well what are we going to do about this. He said well obviously i'm going to have to finish up shortly and they said well you can finish up right now. No doubt he could have gone them for unfair dismissal, but he felt it wasn't worth the stuffing around. He put his head down and opened in competition to them and just recently poached one of there workers.

So.. was it a retrenchment? or did he quit? I'm just curious if he got his package. Cause it would be a sweet deal to have a package AND start your own business.

do ur best to help out but at the end of the day its their problem. you have to put your self first. i cared a little too much for the last company i worked for and i learnt the hard way. so, do the right thing by them but dont let them hold you back at all.

I got an offer recently which was very attractive so I simply called my boss and laid it on the line. I told him I love my job, and that he was an excellent boss (both true) however the other company was offering both money and opportunities that my current company would not be able to match. He agreed it was too attractive an offer not to take seriously and gave me his best wishes. I'm still sorting out the details of the new job but am still being very well looked after in my current spot. I'm pretty lucky I guess but the upfront and honest approach is definitely working out well.

In the past I have left jobs and ended up with former employers as customers, so it's really important to leave on good terms. It's a small world out there.

i walked out one day, full time job, rang them the next day and left a message that i wasn't coming back. Took a bit of a fight to make it all work, but it did.

I’ve left plenty of jobs over the years, usually on bad terms. Employers don’t like it when they can’t bend you over. Once you give notice to your employer, it's their problem. I wouldn’t feel guilty either. Does your employer ever feel guilty when they stuff your pay up, or when they refuse to pay you for overtime etc.

If you’re good at what you do and your services are in demand, employers don’t have it over you.

Agree with that totally. My last job, they screwed up our pay (under paid) for 4 consecutive pay periods. Thats 8 weeks!!! It wasn't until I rallied the troops and threatened workshop strike action that they fixed it all up.

Before then, it was always "Yeah, we'll fix it next pay, don't worry. Now go back to work"
