Golf Clubs.. Calling the Pro's

Anyone here got a set of Precept Golf Clubs?

Are they any good?

Im a complete basher, although occasionally can play a good round ..... are they too expensive for me?

Dont know what price they are, but I may be able to get a set custom made pretty cheaply.

Should i consider them, or just get a REALLY cheap set for 12 months, and then move onto something better.....

While I'm not a pro per-say I would suggest spending the money up front because:
1) Crap clubs are harder to use
2) Having clubs fitted to your height/strength/swing etc is much better for your game in the long run

Precept I don't know a lot about, BUT I know that Ben Hogan and Ping make REALLY nice clubs. I would also suggest that you might need to find out what are the best shafts for your swing eg steel or graphite, blokes generally have to have steel because graphite are too light and swing too fast to control.

My favourite clube is my calloway "big bertha" steel head (graphite shaft) 3+. 250m consistently, although the direction can sometimes be lacking

short answer, get clubs fitted, don't get cheap rubbish clubs unless it's all you can afford

I agree with the Calloway, I have a 454CC big bertha and its an absolute weapon of a club, can hit around 280+, sometimes even in the right direction ;)

Percept aren't bad clubs. they tend to be around the more cheaper end of the market but as stated above the clubs need to suit you, these days even cheaper clubs can be tailored to suit your requirements.

I am no pro either however, but suggest you talk to a pro as they would know best

Once again,im no pro,but if you are looking at a set of clubs i highly recommend Mizuno or titliest.As for your precepts the only reason they are cheaper than other clubs is cause they are an Australian company that doesnt have much advertising power as the big names egTM ,calloway and titliest.
If you want to save money i'd suggest going to a pro (not a retail shop like house of golf etc) and get them to custom fit the precepts to your specs with shafts,grips,lie and loft angles.

Definitely agree with the above! I try and get a round of 18 in every fortnight or so (plus any "corporate" type events!), but I am by NO means any good Custom set definitely is the go, they will be vastly better for technique, will "feel" better, be better built (should be!), and it's not like you're going to "grow out of them" unless you are a growing boy

I just bought Nickalus Progressive XC's, with 3 and 4 irons as Hybrids, and 5-8 plus Wedges as regular Irons. The demonstration showed that the Hybrid (which is a combination between a wood and an Iron) adds between 20 and 30 metres to my shot. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to anybody, I gave my Ping Eye clubs up and I should get them tomorrow.

Anyone who plays golf and actually tries, , , will play good AND bad with either the best clubs in the world or the worst clubs.

I use a second hand set of Cobras, about 10 years old that I got in the states.... Because if my heght, I got 1.5" plugs in the bottom.

If a guy plays of a handicap of less than 5, , then listen to them, , , ,

You are better off spending $500 on clubs and $250 on lessons, , than spending $750 on clubs and going at it !

i just got a set of grey market calloway x18's with the bertha, 2 other woods, 3 bags and putter... AUS$230. Gotta love asia.

i'd never pay more than 500 for a set, i'm not fantastic at the game.

Precept golf clubs are very good indeed. Just make sure you don't get the clubs they make for the low handicapper, eg. the less forgiving muscle back type.
I have the Precept Tour Premium cb's which are fantastic. Good enough for Stuart Appleby!

But also bear in mind, the OEM clubs are not the be all and end all, I have seen and used many componant clubs which, for the money, are so far in front of the Titleist's of this world it's not funny.
Stuff like Wishon and SMT are first class.

i would suggest u go to a pro shop and have a look at the price of clubs u r willing to spend on . and see if u can take a couple of brands out to the pratice area if they have one hit them and find out which ones u like and have them fitted. i got mine fitted and when i picked them up i got a free lesson.

The only other thing to consider is shaft flex, and for the most part Reg. is fine.

Some good advice already offered.

I play Nicklaus Air Bear, with a Taylor Made driver (Fujikura shaft with 7.5 degrees loft 0 ultra low!) and they go alright. Scottc mentioned the most important aspect - and that is what style of iron are they? Blade, muscle back, cavity back, oversize, etc.

This is the single most factor that will have the most impact on club performance. IMO. Also then shaft type, lie angle, length of club, grip thickness - these also need to be customised (which any pro will do) - but the first stop is type of iron.

But my suggestion is the cavity back or oversize. Then when you get good you can go for blades.

Oh yeh I havent heard anything bad about Precept either.

There is more to buying clubs than just height and flex.

The correct shaft length can only be determied in a "dynamic fitting". That is where you hit the exact same type of club, shaft, flex, head design, grip etc but with a different length. Then you can compare impact positions.

Static fitting, where you hold you hands up against the wall, cannot account for swing plane, posture, club weight, lie angle etc etc etc.

you've got lie angles to adjust,swing speed to work out what flex shafts you need,loft angles,grips,offset of the hosel if you want it closed or open etc

Its like buying a car,you not going to buy it off the showroom floor,you want to test drive 'em.

Im 6'4" the fitting guides/calculators suggest +1".....

Going back to the original Post, and rethinking these clubs, it appears they are oversize, so thats the path i think i will go down. Link

Thanks for all the advice, It all seems pretty good, i guess the best thing to do is actually get out on the course semi regularly. That way, you can at least improve. Prior to now, i am a "Play at christmas with the relatives" kind of person.

But that should change over the coming weeks/months/years

Just hope the wife lets me play basketball 3 times per week, and play golf once a week ;)

My best scores i have played at a few courses are: 99 @ Wantima, 89 @ Nudgee South (played with some guys off 2, and they lifted my game that day), and 102 @ St Lucia (14 and 15 kill me there)

Oh i should also add, up until this set of clubs comes, i have never really used woods. I only ever play Irons. (which on any long hole adds 1-2 strokes) although can hit a well fitted 3 iron 200-220 depending on the day. Hopefully one day i can hit woods...(STRAIGHT)

best way to improve your golf is to play with low markers as you can watch what they do and "copy" there techniques to improve your game.

I play off 8, but I hardly play anymore. When I did play I got down to 5.

I only find golf fun now when I am playing with mates.

Was playing off 11 last time i held a handicap, would be single figure golfer if i could putt, 40 odd putts per game just doesn't allow you to get any lower.

As for advice on clubs, see if you can find demo days around your area, some golf clubs advertise them and manufacturers also advertise on their website. Don't get the same feel jsut having a hit in the net of a shop although if thats all you can do. Just make sure you get a hit of what you plan on buying before buying to make sure you're happy with how it feels. Good Luck
