Default ACT - Expansion of mobile speed camera sites

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, John Hargreaves, today
announced that Canberra's mobile speed camera sites will be expanded, with a
further 21 locations being added to existing sites.

"The expansion of the ACT traffic camera program reinforces the Stanhope
Government's commitment to encouraging and enforcing safe and responsible
driving," said Mr Hargreaves.

"Changes have been made to the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic
Management) Regulation 2000 to increase the number of declared mobile camera
sites from 99 to 120.

"The ACT Government will gradually widen the operation of its speed camera
vans to include more arterial, major collector and minor collector roads in
an effort to encourage motorists to slow down.

"Speed combined with driver inattention is one of the biggest killers of
drivers on Australian roads. The use of speed cameras has been shown to
positively modify the behaviour of speeding motorists. Camera locations in
the ACT are placed in areas where there has been a demonstrated history of
road crashes and speeding offences.

"There are approximately 650 arterial, major collector and minor collector
roads in that ACT, and in a staged process all of these roads will be
assessed and, if considered suitable for van placement, will be identified
as part of the mobile speed camera network," said Mr Hargreaves.

The location of all mobile camera sites can be viewed at
