advice on buying a laser please

hi guys im looking at a 90 model laser as a new car for my folks and was wondering what problems to look for as im only familiar with bigger fords.
i know it needs new cv joints and has a rattle in the exhaust but for $700 im willing to replace these items as it is a realy nice neat car. its an auto 1.6 carby engine.
