About twenty five years ago I was so relieved to escape the fascist state that was Western Australia.... you couldn't move for political interference, taxes and police enforcement. I came to Queensland where the water was free, the taxes low and the cops more interested in real criminals who in hindsight were poaching their territory. Dams, power stations, mining towns and infrastructure for the future were being agressively pursued. Sunday school teacher and bible thumper Joh Bjelke-Petersen refused to have speed cameras and told people to venture south of the border into the devil's playground if they wanted to gamble. Hospital care was free regardless of medicare/medibank and you could camp on any one of hundreds of caravan parks right on the ocean foreshores.
Then the Labor Party got in at State and Local levels... the defenders of all that is good for the battler and the kitchen tables. Water tanks were banned and decomissioned, white elephant quality assurance progarmmes, meters put on the water supply to our homes, water restrictions because dam building stopped, pokies, speed cameras, traffic cops everywhere, a protected class of rampant developers (mostly ex politicians and sports personalities) who have forced sales of caravan parks to build concrete and glass, higher rates of taxation, ambulance levies, national parks levies................ and licences for every goddamned thing; you can't do anything here without paying the joining & annual fee to get a a licence to practice the work you've already been trained/apprenticed to do, they may as well tatoo the licence numbers on the wrist.
I'm thinking of leaving Oz for somewhere less over governed, like Iran.
