Default ef fairmont..

Hello you people have been a great helping hand when it has come to my questions and i greatly appriciate it but i have a nother question :

i called up about a 1995 ford fairmont ef that was just around the corner from my house price $4700 200,000k... now firstly over the phone i asked him if anything was rong and he was nice enough to tell me that ocasionaly when the car changes gears it will jerk "im not completley sure what causes this but is it something to do with it slipping???" i asked if he was willing to go lower in price he said yes... but not by heaps... all i really wanna know is what causes this problem and how much will it cost me to fix??

THANX
