Just a suggestion, send the letter via registered post, that way he has to sign for it, which means you know he got and and can prove it in court if need be.

Write it off as a lesson learnt the hard way.

I’ve also had 3 uninsured *****s damage my cars over the years, insurance and in one case a solicitor’s letter made it all so much easier for me.

Could not possibly agree more. The only thing that comes to mind is perhaps some compensation under victim of crimes?

I dont even think its legal for the govt to underwrite insurance... it doesnt have a licence to do so!

I'd chase it up through the Civil Courts. I have been on the recieving end of a civil claim (as the owner of a dog that killed sheep) and how it's been explained to you is how it works. If the courts rule in your favour, you are awarded costs and damages which are advanced to you from Crown coffers (which comes from victims levies) and the Crown recoups costs from the offender.

I got 20K and Katherine got $25K. She took her money, went to England and I haven't seen her since. 2 years and running. She sent me an email from the Greek Islands one week after she left; her parents still invite me around for dinner.

Unbelievably, 8 months later I got a call from the salvos asking me to assist this guy Jamal declare himself bankrupt. I explained to them that I would only assist Jamal if he was wishing to kill himself, and that I found their phone call an affront to common decency. In the end, the insurance company got some 150-170K out of this guy, as he had quite a number of assets although most of them were thought to be gotten by illegitimate means; he was later arrested and charged with drugs charges, supply and distribute etc. And to think all of this could have been avoided should he have paid the $1K per year for insurance.

Not if he is unlicensed and the car is unregistered, they WON'T insure him then.

You can claim under court. Only costs you $66 (well, here in WA) at your local Magistrates Court. If he's found to be at fault he pays compensation plus all court costs.
