Herald Sun has decided that we should now pay to view articles online... I go on once a week to check some sporting news and that's it. They're asking me to pay $3 a week to continue viewing this information. Sorry but I'm going elsewhere. Yea $3 a week probably isn't much but why should I have to pay for something that was originally free to view in the first place.
http://digitalpass.heraldsun.com.au/...HSWEB_SIG122_b Do you reckon the other newspapers will follow suit..? |

I noticed it this morning. I can understand them doing it as I haven't bought a paper in ages since being able to look at it online. Won't be long before others follow suit...

No different if you stood in the newsagent and started reading the paper, wouldnt take long before you got told to move on. It was ALWAYS the intent from the get go that once print was available (and popular) online, it would be a user pays system. Not everything is free in this world. |

The $1.10 the newspaper costs probably only covers the cost of the paper its printed on, or the ink. Advertising dollars would cover most of the rest, even on the website. |

Charging for users to view online makes zero business sense, because the same product can be had for free via many other sources. The only way it might happen is if every paper and every source of news online all over the world made an agreement. That will never happen.

Gives me even more reason to stick to reading The Age.

I dunno. They still sell a LOT of papers (they were the ones we sold out of first at my old coles, could be a diff story overall), and they're not as spin doctory in regards to the news/world sections as the Sun...
At the end of the day for me it's SBS, ABC and the Age. They in my mind are the three least likely to screw consumers over

Yep. I grew up in an ABC family. I have an automatic disdain for commerical news as a general rule

BBC News is the best available.
The Herald Sun had front page coverage of Dita Von Teese in her undies on the front. Now, I thought it was great, but in a world where there are some serious matters going on, they put a few ladies on because Von Teese decided to launch her own lingerie range... And that is the Herald Sun in a nutshell. The scandal created because the Mayor wears a toupe receives precedence over The Queen being shot.

Guys, what you need to understand is that the Paper business model has always been built on running at a loss on the cover price (sales for printing, distribution and staff) and the ads pay for the rest.
ONLINE ADS DO NOT COVER THE COSTS. Not even close! If they went to an online only model as it currently stands, they would have to get rid of around 75% of content. It's simple as that. Watch this doco, it explains a lot. http://youtu.be/rwTMFXgf95c |

It's becoming harder for me to choose what to watch now though as they have multiple ABC channels and old spicks and specks episodes on at the same time haha |

I have an HD satellite PVR (that is also IPTV - Internet TV mode) and an interest in 'news' channels beyond that fed to us domestically, but also observe military news items from Asia, the US, Russia etc. These three are suggestions for news and documentaries, easy to organise for the home:- AlJazeera International (in fulltime english), viewable on YouTube as a channel, and as free to air on satellite TV using a small Austar/Foxtel dish - its on the same satellite! So old Fox dish and no Fox anymore? Just add a decoder. http://www.aljazeera.com/ NHK World Japan in full time english; naturally - the best coverage of Japan and Asia events. In uncompressed HD on C band satellite (big dish), or in SD on Optus D2 (Small dish). http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ RT (Russia Today) fulltime english. Also FTA on Optus D2 (small dish). http://rt.com/ PRESS TV Iranian mouthpiece in english, on Optus D2 (small dish):- http://www.presstv.com/ C band big dish stuff offers more, but not everyone can install such things easily. Darn Councils, neighbours and what not.
