I actually used to work for a greek guy years ago, whose father had a fish and chip shop when he was a kid and remember having the same discussion with him about this and he told me that there is actually both cake and scallop. The local fish and chip shop used to mostly make their own potato scallops by slicing (scalloping) the potato in a thin slice and battering it. Later on some fish and chip shops used to buy what was known as potato cakes that were mass produced mashed potatoes battered and partially fried, then frozen and distributed by the box.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the Greeks had a fish and chip shop on every second corner once!! LOL |

No doubt about it , each state of our wide brown land is like another country, i went to a fish shop in geraldton WA, years ago and asked for the usual victorian order (flake , potato cakes , scallops , crab sticks ,chips.
when i said a piece of flake , the dude looked at me like i was speaking klingon, i dont know whether he was having a lend of me or not , but he said they have hokey over there(did not think much of it ) , he asked me what flake was , i said shark , he looked at me like .... WTF . |

What's the go with the flake situation across other states, is this a Vic/Tas term or unique to us as in were the only ones where that type of fish is common?

I reckon they call it "butterfish" here in SA but not sure if we're referring to the same thing. Pretty certain most "fish" sold in corner stores would just be shark any way

Flake used to be banned in NSW. Not sure if that's still the case though.

There used to be a French bakery in Surfers that sadly closed down a while back that did beautiful eclairs that were a foot long and half that wide and cost you $4.

Off topic, but mik reminds me of milk bars when I was younger - about 30 years ago.
Not unlike Baskin and Robbins, but they had bloody stacks of different ice creams and served "spiders" with ice cream/sponged cream and soft drink (soda or cordial) for you southerners. Awesome gear. Cheers!
