Is it really worth 1000 to spend soley on a console? like i know you can play games on it and watch movies and play over the net, but if thats all you can do, is it really worth the money?????

Fair enough it has all these new features and software and Tech. but how often do you play these consoles and are they worth paying 1k for them then like 100 each game.......

As a personal Choice i have a reletive standard PC that has lasted 3 years. plays everything very nicely and what not. i mostly use it for net and what not, TV and movies/music. i PERSONALLY cant see the point in spending 1000 bucks for a small luxury that you only use maybee for 2-3hours a week or w/e.

i have been weighing up the idea of getting an Xbox or a 360 but really for only a coupld of games, i surely CBF.....

so to all those who think its worth it.......please tell me why.

Well, what version is this though? Is it actually a GT5 or a HD version of GT4 and previous incarnations?

Still, I cannot justify spending $1000 on absolutely anything at the moment.

I agree with the PC guys. $1000 for a console - WTF? But then again I have always thought PC games are so much better due to the mouse and keyboard combo. My comp is 5 years old, still plays all the latest games easily, and they are all free (torrents). Never really "got" consoles to be honest.

[QUOTE=XR6-VCT-2000]Give it not too long and im sure there will be a ps3 emulator available for the pc for download !.

I agree consoles are a waste of time and money. This pc i am running now has lasted me the last few years easily , i have been able to run all pc games and emulators np's and most of the emulated games looked better on my pc than on the game console !.

The GT series of nvidia gfx cards are relatively cheap and even the cheapest 1 kicks a$$ gfx wise compared to 'any' console i have seen so far. A new pc can easily be built for under 1000 ! , easily ! - all that is needed most of the time is a new m/b , ram and gfx card , all the rest can usually be sabotaged from the old pc.

Nothing beats the high sharp resolutions of a pc game imo .
QUOTE]

PS3 Emulator, yeah in 6-7 years when PS4 comes out maybe, that cell processor is quite different a regular PC CPU.
The cheapest GT series card (7300GT?) is nowhere near either an xbox 360 or a PS3, you'd struggle to run a lastest gen PC game with one.
I have a good PC and a top tier last gen card (6800GT) and it struggles with some of the top shelf games unless the visual settings are turned way down.
The only way I can figure you think a bottom end gaming PC would kick **** visually over a 360 or PS3 is if your playing the console on a crappy old TV set. Plug the console into a PC monitor I'd be surprised if you still felt the same way.
Fact is you'd need to spend every cent of that $1000 building a PC to compete with a 360 or PS3 (not kick its ****, compete), while a core 360 is under 500 bucks.

Microsoft and Sony are both selling their consoles for less than what it costs to them to manufacture it, How can people not see the value in that.

Oh, and I dont own either console, so go figure.

Well it's a HD version of GT4, but still pretty good.

Photn,

well I think it's worth it due to the built in blu-ray drive. I believe atm the closest standard blu-ray player is like what $1400? So for $1000 you get a Blu-Ray player and the ability to play games.

I've got mine ordered but when it's all done and dusted due to good trade in deals with EB Games I won't have spent anywhere near $1000 for my PS3 and the games I'm getting

Ill buy one when its
1. Much cheaper
2. There is a clear winner in the Bluray/HDDVD format war
3. Much cheaper

It's less attractive now as well since the PAL version is not as backward compatible as the NTSC version

Well actually the 360 doesn't have a HDMI connection, although I do believe the hd-dvd add on which is coming out shortly does have a HDMI connection so that is extra money to spend on top of the cable just to get HDMI.

* I'm not a Sony fanboy, I just want to clarify some misconceptions some people have
yeh i didnt think the 360 had a HDMI port yet??? im going to wait for that before i splash out on one, seeing as my LCD and HD projector both have native HDMI n shizzle

Exactly, and have a look at the specs on the 360, it uses a 3 core processor, each core clocked at 3.2ghz, compared that to say an E6700 C2D which reatails around $800 and has two cores clocked at 2.67ghz.
The graphics chip is very closely related to the R600 core slated for release some time this year.
PS3's Cell processor is a complete departure from conventional CPU design, emulating it on a conventional intel or AMD CPU would be a monumental task.

The bottom line is right now, if you buy a top end expensive gaming system, it can top the 360 graphically but cost you a bomb, a middle of the road system will not quite be there and still cost a lot more, and a bargain basement yum cha system will be blitzed by the 360 and the PS3 and still cost more to buy.
Expect the 360 and PS3 graphics to get considerably better as squeeze every last bit of performance out of the systems. it will be a good couple of years before PC's take a clear lead from the consoles and even longer before they represent better value.

xbox 360 has a far better online gaming experience than playstation.

I have been playing halo 2 for 2 years on xbox live, and I am waiting for halo 3 to buy a 360..

I think I last played playstation about 2 years ago. I think it was Socom online. It was good for a while but then the empty servers and hackers killed my enjoyment. Since then I have have built a PC and enjoy participating in much larger and faster servers.

I dont see the same value in a gaming console as in a PC. Each to their own I guess.

As if you'd pay full price for a Playstation, I remember when the PS2 came out at something like $850 and as soon as the Nintendo64 came out they dropped something like $200-300 off it.... I wouldve felt a bit peed off if i'd paid full price.

This might drop the xbox 360 prices, or make them bring out a special deal..

Here's hoping!

Sorry bud but If you find it that hard to believe then you are not looking at the big picture.
Sony and Microsoft have complex business models in place.
Both companies sell at a loss so they can make money from licencing of games and peripherals.

Its a well known fact that Microsoft has LOST a lot money on the original xbox, this was always the plan, Microsoft absorbed the loses to buy market share away from sony so that then next console was well placed to compete and actually make a profit, it is even rumored that even the 360 will barely break even over its life, and that the grand plan is for the next one to really make money.

Is it that hard to believe that a company might have strategies in place that will initially cost them money so they can make a larger profit in the future.

Here's 3 things that you may want to know about the PS3 and why it potentially sucks ***.

8 cores right? WRONG! Although they are manufactured with 8 cores .. get this, 6 are programmable and will be used for the games that you play, 1 is reserved for OS+security apps, and 1 is a spare to increase yield.

What does that mean?

Any developer who is currently making a title for the PS3 has been told to expect anywhere up to 2!! cores to be faulty and unusable! soooo your PS3 could be running on 5 of 6 available cores OUT OF THE BOX, and guess what ... STIFF ****.

Quote:
Originally Posted by PS3 spec sheet

And honestly, thats some bloody impressive figures ... but the come with 1 small catch. When your programming for the PS3, each cell can be told to do basically whatever you want it to do, thats the beauty of them being programmable. To achieve a true processing potential of the above quote, each processor would have to be running at roughly 95%+ efficiency, and herein lies the problem. The best -to date- efficiency of any PS3 title has been 30% !!! Kinda throws all your pretty numbers out the window don't it.

Now this could also be seen as a good thing as well, anyone who has seen a good PS3 title can see that it's already looking pretty sweet graphicaly, and anyone who has played GT4 on PS2 knows how far the PS2 has come from a programming point of view. If you had have told me that GT4 was even possible on a PS2, having seen the titles at release, I would have called you insane. So the headroom is there for programmers to suss out the fine points of making the PS3 REALLY work for them. Only time will tell, which prings me to point 3.

Need Development Tools? Make'm yourself sucker - If you wanna know, as a developer, what the Xbox360 is doing and any given time, the tools are available - from microsoft - to find those things out. So right off the bat you have a developers toolkit available with all sorts of goodies to make your life as a programmer easier. So you can do the things you want to be doing ... like making the game, you know, the bit that makes you money. For the PS3, you have to make all those tools yourself, which only makes things 10x harder. Now you have to make, and debug, any tool you will need so you can find out why things are happening the way they are! And seeing as if you want to make the best possible use of the Core technology, the cores are switching and swapping their assignments extremely rapidly, you have to log and analyse core flow charts as well.. it can be a programming nightmare to say the least.

I had a play of a PS3 this afternoon, spent around 20 minutes trying out the new F1 game. Graphics, detail level, sounds, and the flow of the game are amazing. It was being played on a $3K HD TV, and the depth of detail, sharpness and crispness of it all was top notch.

However, I can't see myself buying one at $1000, and also factor in I don't have a HD TV, so I think I'll stick to my PC and PS2 a little while longer.

It is true Microsoft lose money on the xBox and xBox 360.. they make up some of it in game sales though.

Indeed it is.

Xbox don't use PowerPC though. They use Intel based chips now.

The original xBox was a 733Mhz Pentium III chip.. The 360 has a Xenon ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenon_%28processor%29 ) chip.. which is PPC based.

The Nintendo Wii also uses a PPC based chip...

Now I am tempted... :

Oh and I am sick of people being fanboys about XBOX and PCs - all i care about is put the disc in and play! WGAF about every pathetic little quibble! I bought a PS2 because you can put the disc in and play. No installing this, upgrading that, error this and error that. Just PLAY!

With the Playstation 3 for the internet you can use either a USB Keybord/Mice or Bluetooth Keybord/Mice. You can use the controll pad its just a bit slower

Well it sort of is, its main processor is a PowerPC element, but there are then 8 other co-processors (synergistic processing elements, actually there are 6 for the PS3, one is reserved for security and the other not used.) The SPE's do most of the work and the main processor controls them.

The SPE's are similar to what you might find on the GPU of a graphics card, only more generic.

Its kind of a cross between a conventional CPU and a GPU

The 360 by by comparison is a a triple core CPU, that is just three conventional processors on the same die.
