Rare Holden a lock at $197k
Nick Dalton Saturday, July 4, 2009 © The Cairns Post THE most expensive new Holden ever built has been snapped up by a wealthy car enthusiast in Cairns. Businessman Kevin Lock has bought a one-off Holden Special Vehicles W427 with a drive-away price of $197,500, significantly more than the $165,000 price tag of the standard version and five times the cost of a $35,000 family Commodore. The V8-powered supercar was ordered by another Far Northern HSV fan who later withdrew from the deal. The car has a $20,000 special paint job, finished in Panorama Silver, the colour of the first HSV, a Group A SS VL Commodore. HSV owner Tom Walkinshaw has signed the boot lid and two front guards. Other features include $2500 personalised plates ‘W427KJ’, a sunroof and the build number 427. While only 137 are being made, 427 was to have been the last build number and refers to the capacity of the engine measured in cubic inches. It is not Mr Lock’s first W427. He took delivery of the region’s first in September last year when he was handed the keys to a $170,000 W427. After reading a story in The Weekend Post about Irelands of Cairns getting another W427, Mr Lock went to have a look and soon after signed a deal on the exclusive car. "I really wanted two, one to drive and one to keep but now I don’t think I’ll drive any of them because I’ve just bought a V8 Toyota LandCruiser," he said. "People think I’m crazy but they also think I’m crazier because I have four trawlers and eight service stations." The furthest the cars travel is around the block after Mr Lock washes them. The Holden W427 marks the 20th anniversary of the company. It has a dry sump 7-litre Chevrolet Corvette LS7 V8 engine with 375kW of power and 640Nm of torque, enough to catapult the car from 0-100km/h in less than five seconds and onto 250km/h-plus. Its average fuel consumption is 17.2 litres/100km. http://www.cairns.com.au/article/200...ocal-news.html |

Some people have too much money. If I had that much I certainly wouldn't be lashing out on a couple of Holdens

What a waste of 2 cars, not a Holden fan but too buy 2 of these thing to sit in a shed is kinda pointless.

some people think they can buy classic vehicles, classics are blood sweat and tears, not chequebooks and fancy suits!

It's interesting to consider that there isn't any current racing program in Australia where local Australian cars are successful. Sure, the V8 supercars look like local cars, but aside from the outside body profile, there's nothing in common with our beloved falcadores. Therefore, makes you wonder what's out there today in Australia that will rise in value in the long term. I can't think of anything that can be bought new today, wins races, has soul and is designed in Australia. Any other opinions on this ? |

Well........that is the point........In an era where there is no production car racing program......and neither FPV or HSV have to prove anything on the track.........HSV go and build a monster V8 that will tear the head off anything that FORD or HOLDEN have ever produced in this country. It is basically the closest thing in performance to a V8 supercar that we have....that alone will secure its short term value and status IMO. |

Holden never recovered their reputation after backing down in V8 form alltogether on the race track, in the face of the GTHOs in the early 1970s.... |

The W427 smashed everything from FPV and HSV around there by a long way, and its a tightish circuit... the gap would be bigger at a place like Bathurst where it can use its power and stretch its legs... FPV F6 = 70.32 sec FPV GT = 70.23 sec HSV LS3 GTS = 69.13 sec HSV W427 = 66.69 sec HRT Ride Car = 60.37 sec FPR V8 Supercar = 59.14 sec That's seriously quick for a fully registered stock factory warranted car on street tyres..

Some of the fg f6 have been making about 280rwk.....not much extra for 100k i think... Last edited by rootster; 06-07-2009 at 10:08 PM. |

Good on him, if you have the money, why not. It does nothing for me, but then I don't have any money.

i didn't see the lap times sorry....but the one on top gear was struggling to maintain top speed....
What speed are they limited to...i don't think the are...the f6 limited to 250km...so it would struggle with lap times... |
