We had ours today. A fine way to get to know those people over the fence.

I heard a similar joke except you add sex and violence on top of booze and singing. It was mainly pointed towards Tasmanians.

older than I am but still makes me smile.......
Joe Bob has been in the business world for 20+ years and is worn out from all of the stress. He quits his job and buys 40 acres and a cabin in the remote regions of Montana--as far as he can get from the rest of humanity. His only human contacts are the postman, who visits once a week, and when he stops at the local market for groceries about once a month. Other than that, his life is absolute peace and tranquility with no human interaction. After six months of living in nearly total isolation, as he is finishing dinner one evening, someone knocks on his door. Upon opening it he is confronted with a large, bearded man. "Name's Mike...your neighbor from five miles West of here. I’m having a party on Saturday and thought you'd like to come." "Great," says Joe Bob. "After six months out here I'm ready to meet some local folks." "Thank you," says Mike. As he is leaving, he stops, turns and says to Joe Bob, "Gotta warn you. There's gonna be some drinkin' goin' on." "Not a problem. After 20 years in the business world, I can drink with the best of them." Again, as he starts to leave, Mike stops and says, "More 'n' likely, there’s gonna be some fightin' too." Joe Bob says, "Well, I know how to get along with people. I can take care of myself and I'll be there. Thanks again." Again, Mike stops and says, "I've seen some wild sex at these parties, too." "Now that's not a problem," says Joe Bob, "I've been all alone for six whole months! I'll definitely be there. By the way, what should I wear?" Mike stops in the door once again and says, "Whatever you want…just gonna be the two of us." and yep! street party here every xmas.......xmas eve I'm out the front giving away lollies to the littlies in my santa outfit. wouldn't miss it for quids.......smiles for miles.......costs me around $150 just for lollies but well worth it to see the little faces light up. just about finished putting the lights up, one more string of icicles across the top gutter and we'll light em up.

Our little sub diversion out in the country does a lot of partying. We take it in turns for Friday night drinks as well as random get togethers. Its bloody funny at times with everybody acting like they are 18 and knocking back rum. Christmas is usually a good time as the non partyiers come along as well and Santa stops by for the kids. New Years eve is Mad Max themed.

S.I.L. lives down south, every weekend is "drink's", they take turns whose house it is this week.....all D.I.N.K.'S......or kids grown up, up market affair with "theme nights".......last week was "pirates", very silly and childish , but very good and bloody funny, we often go to those.
where they live is only about 30 minutes north of Gawler in a small town, xmas is a "whole of town" affair, staged in the local footy grounds, we often attend that, just like the good old days where santa comes along and hands out the pressies. xmas in larger cities has become more about the receiving rather than the gathering and the giving. not uncommon out here to have street parties or whole of town gatherings in small towns, we stage similar.........all for the kids of course. a lot of these things are slipping into history as families become too busy.....so sad.

I live in a cul-de-sac with about a dozen houses. We have Christmas drinks & nibbles & then back up again to celebrate Australia Day.
Us blokes will quite often have a few coldies in the arvo (especially if we've all been out in the garden/ cutting lawns etc). |

That's funny you say that, I usually find the different nationalities to be the most sociable and hospitable.

I just met the people who live two doors up the road the other week, after living here since 1994 lol.
If I'm outside doing something usually the neighbours come for a chat but other than that we all mind our own business. |

I used to cringe when invited to a street party.
The level of familiarity that develops afterwards in some people is just annoying. Luckily they have to be good swimmers now to annoy me. |

I have no problem being friendly and courteous to my neighbors, but that is where the line is drawn. I stay out of their business and they stay out of mine, with all due respect of course.
I do have one neighbour whom has helped us out and will go out on a limb to help him out since we built our house opposite his place. Top bloke, always friendly and will always go out of his way to help out if we need it. Sometimes comes over with free Lobsters his son has caught while out on his boat.

We use to have great Xmas street parties until the organiser and another neighbour moved. They were usually that good the police would turn up.

I would love to have a street party and have nice neighbours, its depressing half the time you can't say even hello without them giving you some disgusting look. Melbourne isn't like what it used to be.

I got a big family so the people in the street will have to wait until relatives start dropping. If I could pick my neighbours I`d have Greeks on one side and Italians on the other. They fed the world! The lady I'm next to now, I swear she`s addicted to the sound of lawnmowers.

Street party here every night of the week. Although I am the only house on the street so its a pretty sad affair which usually ends with me falling asleep after a few cans in front of the idiot box...

I'm sure all my neighbours are nice people and I'm polite to them, but I mind my own business and they, theirs. I talk to people all day in my line of work and am in a very busy office, I don't have the energy for small talk when I get home. It's nothing against them or anything personal, people are all different.

We live in an area of semi rural blocks mostly 2 to 5 acres so not on top of each other I suppose. Guess thats why it works so well, only about 40 houses in the street. When we first moved there we only knew 2 people but now know most to just say hi or wave. Creates a great atmosphere and for those on their own adds some security if something goes pear shaped. As an example my neighbours dog went missing yesterday, he lives on his own and was very worried, a quick couple of door knocks and the whole street was on the lookout. Just got a call from my wife as I am on the spirit atm and the pooch has been found in a rabbit hole under his concrete drive. So a quick wip round and one neighbour grabbed my backhoe to start and another rang his mate at the fire brigade and at the monent they are cutting up the concrete drive. All happened in an instant. Miniture Dachund so going to be tricky, fingers crossed

Live in a cul de sac. We have street drinks on the last Sunday of every month which is held indoors taking turns at someone's place in the cooler months and outdoors in summer. Usually 6 families take part but for the December one at Christmas more usually come...about 15 houses in the street
We've even done a Hunter Valley trip together and next year planning a cruise. I have great neighbours.
