Default Toyota in a race?

It looks like Toyota is in a race to be out of the door before Holden, with the announcement of October 3 2017 closure.

There is more to that decision of the date. Toyota is going through a major transformation in AU and the timing was dependent on those other projects. I'm not willing to go into any further detail as these are not for public knowledge.

It's replacement is a V6 Camry (like the Aurion was anyway). They are dropping the Aurion name. So there will now be a 4cyl and 6 cyl Camry like there was in the past.

It's only fitting that either Ford or Holden are last out the door IMO. And that will be Holden/HSV. Last one standing so to speak

How much did Holden pay them just so they could be the last?

We all know full well that the only reason why Holden is keeping the Commodore name is so that it one day overtakes the Falcon name as the longest running Aussie nameplate. Typical Holden. They've made Joe Public think their company was more Australian than Ford. Pure marketing BS - but good on them.

You may have worded that wrong, the commodore name only came about in 78. I get what you're saying though.

That's what I mean. Falcon went from 1960 - 2016.

Commodore started in 1978. They have 17 more years to catch up - hence keeping the Commodore name going.

All good man.

Yeah, I mean calling a FWD a Commodore? LOL. I think Ford did the right thing about shelving the Falcon name out of respect.

To me the new one is the polar opposite of what a commodore is/was. Ford did the right thing laying the falcon to rest without having an equivalent layout vehicle as a replacement, and were even smarter having the replacement (mondeo) for sale before the final hour. I am a bit fond of the early steel bumpered commodores. They actually are quite a small car, engine up front, drive out back, and pretty light. It's not that hard to make a blue 308 propel one with a tickle here or there.

Isn't that the NSW zone office & parts warehouse ?

Toyota will still be a player in the Aust. car market, Caringbah should remain as will GM-H's Dandenong facility.

The workers...happily...are being given plenty of notice at least. I'm reminded of Ford and Holden workers bitterly complaining when they were given a couple of years notice that their jobs were going.

They should be grateful...most people only get a couple of weeks notice or sometimes even unexpectedly turn up to locked gates on monday morning...

By the way things are going, the lame lion brand itself is an endangered species and may soon be resident of automotive museums, but the Blue Oval Badge will sail on into the foreseeable future.

Yes, the blue oval has a much larger reach then the red circle. But do you know the origin of the lion rolling a rock that is holdens badge? Apparently that's how man invented the wheel, seeing a lion roll a stone. Clever signage. My blood is blue, but I can give credit where. credit is due. I'm surprised said lion didn't have the guy for lunch.

Both Holden and Ford are on the endangered list, regardless what the PR machines of either camp reckon.

Ford have one seller, and that's the Ranger. Ford should have learned a long time ago that one model don't maketh the brand with Falcon. Whilst Mondeo, Focus and Fiesta are decent cars, nobody knows about them and their "marketing" of these lines is abysmal at best.

Holden though have nothing but crap in the cupboard once the local Commodore is done in October. Unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat and they secure factory RHD US premium product (Cadillac, Corvette and Camaro), they are done for as a brand.

Well...they are.

Holden are an important name in Australian history...from the humble beginnings as a saddle maker, to the coach builders that built some of the first Fords in Australia.

The establishment of the Holden brand in Australia in 1948 with our own unique product was an important part of our country's post-war recovery and an amazing chunck not just our automotive, but general folk law.

Complete utter ignorance to not respect or appreciate it's history.

Australian 6, Falcon, P76...Holden...proud entities in our automotive history.

Except that you're forgetting about a little thing called GM.

Holden ceased to exist as an Australian company from that point forwards. They were Holden in name only.

And of course I knew Holden's history prior to GM. Putting together car bodies for Ford and other companies is totally different to developing your own car.

But sometimes I think I'm on a Holden Sympatico Forum here.

Wow, isn't that profound, a lion pushing a stone which inspired mankind to make the wheel. All this time, I thought the holden logo either represented a lion in a limp-wristed lame pose, or the lion was holding a steering wheel.

They went within 5 minutes of winning LeMans last year
Must admit they don't have quite the proud international racing history of the blue oval which has won just about every single racing series and prestigious races there is to win around the globe. Not to many other manufacturers can lay claim to that achievement.
Even beat GM and Toyota in this particular race Although Mitsubishi and others beat them all by decades.
