Thumbs up Ford Fusion Hybrid 2010

Ford Fusion Hybrid
April 2010 Sales: 1,516
MSRP: $27,950 - $27,950
MPG: 41 City / 36 Hwy
The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid offers buyers an earth-friendly alternative to regular mid-size sedans. Its hybrid system shines with reduced emissions and increased fuel economy, while still providing all the normal useful mid-size sedan features.
The Fusion Hybrid uses a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine in combination with an electric motor powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery. To link the gas engine and electric motor together, a continuously variable transmission, also known as a CVT, is used to optimally match the power and gearing. Safety features include electronic stability and traction control, security system, dual front and side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

or this ?
The Escape Hybrid is available in Base or Limited trims with either front or four-wheel drive. The Escape Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine linked to an electric motor. The net result is acceleration similar to that of a V6. As a full hybrid, the Escape Hybrid can provide truly guilt-free operation by running solely on electric power in low-load conditions. The Hybrid uses a continuously variable transmission, also known as a CVT, that optimally matches the power and gearing. Standard safety features include front airbags, front seat mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. AdvanceTrac stability control with anti-rollover technology, four-wheel ABS and tire pressure monitoring round-out the impressive list. The Hybrid also offers a convenient AC outlet for powering small devices such as a laptop.

Oh yeah, forgot about those. Only problem is, they are getting a bit old tech now, really could do with a proper update. Good options from Ford USA, who would have thought?

The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-size Fusion sedan launched to the U.S. market in March 2009, with an initial sale price of US$27,270.[26] EPA ratings for the Ford Fusion Hybrid are 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. In city driving a full tank delivers 700 miles.[27] In April 2009 editors of Kelley Blue Book named the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid to its 2009 list of "Top 10 Green Cars".[28]

The Fusion Hybrid qualified for a hybrid tax credit of US$3,400 prior to March 31, 2009. The credit dropped to US$ 1,700 if purchased by September 30, 2009, and to US$850 if purchased by March 31, 2010. This credit phased out on April 1, 2010.[29]

This model gets better EPA-estimated fuel economy than the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Nissan Altima Hybrid, and the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, viewed as its competitors in the mid-size sedan segment. from Wikipedia

I agree it doesn't make sense to get better mpg city than highway, but does better than the Camry Hybrid..Toyota have been quiet about that here !

Both cars, the Escape and Fusion, are in development under the new 'One Ford' plan. The Escape will be fused with the Kuga, a Focus based SUV, and the Fusion and Mondeo are to become one. No point bringing them here when both are only a few years away from replacement.

I'm not a Hybrid fan, and even these two cars don't excite me the least. You can achieve green cred with other fuels, such as LPG and Diesel, or use modern tech similar to ECOBoost or the VW TSI idea, small engines with turbos that deliver great performance and amazing fuel consumption. This tech is not only cheaper, but does away with expensive, heavy batteries.

IIRC most hybrids barely use the electric motor on the highway. They make alot more sense in stop-start driving than cruising around.

So does the Diesel Mondeo use less fuel than the Fusion Hybrid, in the same way it also beats the Camry Hybrid? One has to ask, what would be the point?

Hybrid Fusion:
41mpg city = 5.7l/100km
36mpg highway = 6.5l/100km

New Diesel Mondeo, 5.6l/100km combined?

If Ford Aus actually knew how to market, these things would sell very very well over here!

Short answer,
Fusion Hybrid uses less fuel than the US Camry Hybrid
TDCI Mondeo uses less fuel than the the Camry Hybrid

The Mondeo's diesel engine does not comply to tough US NOX emission rules for diesel engines
and would need expensive Urea injection after treatment to comply. Europe is getting worried
about diesels as Euro 6 approaches and the cost of NOX equipment remains much higher on
diesel engines than going to petrol direct Injection turbo engines...

It would be interesting to see Mondeo TDCI Vs Mondeo Ecoboost Vs Fusion Hybrid Vs Hybrid Camry...
I know we will never truly be available for compare all cars directly but
I'm hoping there will be enough data to give meaningful inferences...

I Hope so.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10230024-48.html

quite a few reviews on how these cars are getting over 1000miles to a tank of gas.
I read one that drove a city loop, in peak hour and still made the 1000mile range.

Very true. Hybrids just do not sell. Toyota must already be worried about sales of the Camry Hybrid if last months figures are the best they can get with all the marketing they have done for it.

Maybe the majority of the buying public aren't as dumb as I thought, cause not many people seem to be getting sucked into the whole buy a hybrid and the planet will love you crap.
