Again,in a BA four speed it needed because of the tall 1st gear.Much better to drive day to day also.Im comparing this to my old 3.46 gears that saw,270rwkw,295rwkw and finally 320rwkw,they were not in with my current power.
My old xr6t ba 4 spd auto went 11.4 and twice ran 11.6 with stock diff gears. So how much did the diff gears add? 322rwkw so about same as yours. My long legged 4spd auto as you put it didn't have issues getting up the quarter. This mod (diff gears) adds nothing to a modded xr6t

I have to agree with Freddy here in the way of diff gears for a 4 speed. The tall first gear is a killer for initial speed. 3.7s really are needed to get a good take off. This is what I've experienced with my s/c setup. Turbo is different. The boost handles the rest shortly after. Speaking of which, how much did u pay to get the 3.7s fitted and was it done through Bruce?

Much better off with a 2800 stall converter to ensure a nice takeoff on full boost. Forget the diff gears go the converter. Mine ran 11.4 stock diff gears and 2800 converter. Rolling around just spools up as converter builds load.

Over on LS1 a forum sponsor is having a poo-slinging match with some of the other forum members about diff gears. His view is that you don't need diff gears with the right engine upgrades. I kind of get his point however I can wind out 1st on my 6-speed to nearly 90km/h, and it's lazy as all get out down low.

I've heard 3.9's are the go for quick city driving?

I had fun in a '94 corolla while my Ghia was off the road for a couple of weeks... you could sink the boot in and it would just rev like crazy, with fast cornering and great takeoff it made for some fun city driving.

Downside of course is that you lack the headroom, feel like a sardine and people ask what colour your handbag is.

Compare smashing through gears on a 4cly econo-box to smashing gears in a V8... different ball game, both insanely fun, but you just don't get that torquey rush of the V8 or a turbo.

My point being any car can be fun!

This is true. Riki83 on here has 580rwkw and he did diff gears, good for power skids, no good down the qtr.

The gears in my 6spd man could be slightly shorter in first, however it would just be wheel spin city....

In my humble opinion if you want a fast feel without the warp speed id go for a MANUAL focus XR5 or even an XR4. I used to have a Honda Civic Sport current model in manual and that thing was no V8 or Turbo but you would revv it around nip in and out of gaps and it would even hit 102kph in 2nd and launched off the line being a light car.

Or for another example my BF wagon has more power to weight than my dads Audi TT turbo with a 6 speen manual but i know which one feels faster and which one id rather chuck into a corner. Btw still love my wagon haha

IMHO small light cars that rev are more fun if you are strictly sticking to the speed limit.

to make my xr6t feel fast I have to be breaking all speed limits or else its pretty boring.

Interesting. I guess its something I need to think about. I currently have 3.45lsd and stock converter, but have a 2400rpm stall ready to fit soon. I might just do the stall, re-tune it and see what kind of difference it makes to the initial hole shot off the mark. Im not looking to win 1/4 races, but its got to be better than the slow semi-laggy feel I currently have at the moment before boost kicks in with revs. Boost tends to come on song by about 2200-2400 so Im hoping the power kicks in sooner with the stall. The diff gears I like as it is now, it was only as suggestion made by Bruce for fun in suburbia.

In my experience, the 6 speed auto FG XR6T feels quicker than the manual beleive it or not (I couldn't either, even though I was driving them back to back)

The XR6T does feel benign in its power delivery, especially in 2nd and definitely in 3rd. The torque is wonderful, silky smooth, and very VERY useable and welcome. Because of how flat the torque curve is, you don't feel like you're accelerating overly hard, until you see the speedo.

Up high in the RPM range, the 4.0T just begins to make more noise than torque, so it is most fun to ride the torque and keep engine RPM between 2500-4000, that is what makes me smile the most.

XR5 Turbo (the OP mentioned as an alternative) is the same deal. Torque curve so flat, that it doesn't feel overly fast. I have driven a normal one and a Dreamscience one, and both are the same sort of feel. Refined, torquey, but not fast (even though they are ripping the road a new ***, well the Dreamscience one anyway).

The only way you can define what is fun in YOUR opinion, is to drive the cars, and give them some stick to see whether you're after something with a more peaky power delivery.

Is it fun? Legally no imo. Not even gunning it from the lights to the limit is legal anymore....

No probs ill post it today or tomorrow its saved on my computer. it would be an interesting comparison, converter vs diff gears.

I think your choice of diff gears is pretty good, but id never go 3.9s or 4.11s in an auto 6t, it would be slower.

I now have a ba xr8 6spd man with 4.11 diffs gears, makes a massive difference but it has no boost.

I can see why they might not like people doing this, as someone going 0 - 60 in 3 seconds compared to grandma in her corolla taking 60 years, 4 dead cats and a broken hip to get there might feel belittled.

Seriously though, very quick acceleration under the wrong circumstances could end up badly, we all know it, but the law enforcement side of things is where it becomes shady.

Officially it's deemed "excessive acceleration"... however the officer is able to determine what this is, for example:

Someone speeds up to 70km/h 10 meters before the 70 zone. They get done for speed + excessive acceleration.

Someone takes off from the lights and beats all the other cars before the merge lane, excessive acceleration.

Someone takes off from the lights and suddenly boots it from 20 - 60, excessive acceleration.

Point being, if you drive in ANY OTHER WAY THAN WHAT TEH RULZ BAWK SEZ..... you're probably like 98% of the rest of us.

This confuses me and probably just points out the lack of clarity in the road rules. There is no rule regarding how fast you are permitted to accelerate in respect to speed km/h and time, therefore "excessive" is a purely subjective term.

No?

i doubt any falcons are as fun to drive in the speed limit as purpose built sportcars for the road, ie a mazda mx-5.

The excessive is a subjective term, and thats the main problem I have with current Hoon laws.

Im sure my idea of excessive acceleration is very different compared to Mavis down the street view on it. Though on the same note, its pretty hard to set a clear cut law on what is excessive without having G meters in cars to refrence.

The most fun car i have ever had the chance to drive was my '00 Transit Diesel that I drove around europe. Used to have to flat change it and drive the wheels of the thing to keep up with traffic, ace fun and it never got past posted speed limit signs before they changed again.

Great post. The most fun I've ever had driving was in a 1.6 mk1 escort. The exhaust barked like hell you could chuck it sideways whenever you liked and it topped out at 80mph. I've driven a 600hp r34 gtr that wasn't anywhere close. You knew one thing for sure when it let go you'd be dead!
