I have a 2006 Ford Focus that I just paid $1800 to have the drive shafts replaced only to drive it out of the repair shop still making a terrible noise and then be told the transmission has had it. Being quoted between $3,000-$6000 for repair, more than car is worth, so I'm trying to work out is it worth trying to sell as is? Would there be someone interested in buying who could/would want to do the transmission work themselves do you think? The engine is in good condition, (and new drive shafts!) Body work good condition. Only a month left on rego. Or do I resign myself to a couple of hundred dollars for the wreckers to collect???

$1800 for drive shafts?, you need to find a cheaper mechanic, drive shafts come in at about $300, so $1500 for labour seems a bit steep.

It's done 132,000kms. Melbourne-based.
Yes, sounds like I was shafted on the drive shafts! |

Assuming it’s the petrol, four speed automatic - should be a good prospect for a DIY’er if you’re inclined to cut your losses. Used gearboxes seem around $600-up, quite a bit less at the self serve yards.

Many years ago (my dad payed) but a rebuilt 4 speed zf for my first car cost $3500. That crapped itself only weeks after the NRMA certified trans place that did it went bust. So that sucked as there was a 6 month warrenty. Anyhows the mechanic i towed the car to showed me that the old box was physically dropped and booger welded back together, hence the failure due to atf not getting to where atf needs to go. So best option was a used tranny and he asked me to give him time sourcing one. He didnt want to get an off the shelf from a wreckers, he wanted one from a part out that was still drivable so he could road test it. For $800 the thing was still good for the next 110,000km before i sold the car.

Sorry if this is a HiJack but I'm pulling my hair out with this 2011 Focus we have. Done 103ks service history before us shows its done TCM swap a couple of thousand Ks ago under warranty. I got the car handed to me by my son who parked it up with a trans fault. $1100 later the mechanic claimed it was bad sensors.
I drove it for around 300ks and then again "trans fault" this time different codes and input turbine sensor circuit A fault. So this time I thought, well I'll swap out that sensor for a new one myself. $130 later and 30 minutes later I had it replaced myself and faults gone and driving again. 200ks down the road....she's done it again....same codes. I was actually prepping it to sell next week, got a RWC, spent $2900 getting it up to sale ready and was looking to pop $5000K on it to recoup something back plus what I have spent. All up with my son and I combined it owes us around $8K still. My question is.....what would cause this sensor to keep going bad but after 200-300 ks driven each time. I must admit, when the fault was gone it shifts weirdly anyway but nothing comes back as a code, the TCM is basically new and the clutch packs have been done twice inside 103,000 ks according to service records so what else can be wrong. At this stage I'm thinking I'll have to lose even more money and advertise it as low ks, RWC and rego'd but needs a trans service and sell it for $3K or $4K |
