I know that auto electrics is a very complicated area and I'd be concerned that do this might lead to a crapload of other problems with the electrics, plus the car mightn't start if alternator is disconnected. There are about 3 electric wires connected to the alternator, which would do this and not cause any further problems? ie keep the dash light off but not affect running of car

I see what you're saying. I was more referring to the dash itself, rather than the engine bay area. I couldn't see that being an issue. So it's my bad for being a little slack with my explanation.

Please read the manual carefully, as the these manufacturers spent millions of dollars making sure it is perfect.....Now why are there so many problems with my car, when I follow the instructions to the letter?....Answer, majority rules round here

Reviving an old thread.
What about a crack in the driving / fog lights? YOu know the ones in the front bumper.

Would that fail?

Ask around...usually in most areas around the state you can find a guy like the one who did the roadworthy on an old Corolla for one of our sons (no names, no pack drill). I knew there were a couple of minor points that needed fixing...nothing safety related, but just a minor oil weep here and there and a couple of chips in the windscreen, but I knew that they wouldn't pass. I just really wanted to find out what needed fixing so I could get a safety certificate.
When I turned up, the guy had a look and said "So is the roadworthy for you or to sell the car?"...this implied to me there was two roadworthies he did...one strict one for sale, a big more lenient one if it is just you registering the car for yourself.

Shop around...

No naked lights allowed. So yes, it'd fail.

Yep, failed.
2 cracked fog lights and a cracked PVC pipe of some sort. Will just trade the car now.

That has been my experience over the years.
