I'm not wearing one of them yet but we are having a meeting tomorrow to decide on an appropriate course of action and prevention in my building.

While I'm not wearing one now, I did wear one a few years ago while in Korea when there was the whole Bird Flu scare.

They just don't work on western faces. Our noses are too prominent, when I had mine, there would be gaps either side of the nose, and the air would just enter and leave from the path of least resistance.. the gap.

Wearing glasses was impossible, as they got steamed up every time you yould breathe out.

I had to resort to gluing and duct taping a spread opened paper clip across the ridge of the nose on the mask so as to crimp the gaps closed...

Didn't look good at all lol.

Edit... I knew it was in one of my boxes.. I have a habit of not tossing things away...

Ok so out of the 152 deaths only 20 have been confirmed as piggy flu.

Hunt for 22 on Mexico flu flight

* Misha Schubert, Nick Miller and Julia Medew
* April 29, 2009

HEALTH authorities were last night hunting for 22 Australians who were on the same flight as three New Zealanders who have swine flu.

Another 88 Australians were feared to have the virus, which has been blamed for more than 150 deaths in Mexico.

And Australian health authorities were given sweeping powers to forcibly detain and isolate suspected carriers.

Following tests at a World Health Organisation accredited laboratory in Melbourne, New Zealand last night confirmed that three high school students had swine flu after flying back from Mexico on Saturday. Seven others in the group are believed
to have the virus.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon said officials were trying to contact 22 Australians who were on the same flight - nine from Queensland, eight from NSW, four from Victoria and one from South Australia.

If they had flu-like symptoms, Ms Roxon said, they would be asked to submit to testing and would be isolated until the results were known. Asked why there was a delay in searching for the travellers, Ms Roxon said it took time for the students to exhibit symptoms and that tests had to be done.

"We do expect . . . that we would be able to get that sort of information more quickly for future instances, but really that
response time is quite good."

She emphasised that the powers to detain people suspected of having the virus were created only out of "an abundance
of caution".

"We are a very long way off needing to do that."

She said tests on the 88 Australians suspected of having the flu should be known in the next couple of days. Thirty-one people are being tested in Queensland, 16 in Victoria, 14 in South Australia, 10 in NSW, eight in Western Australia, five in the ACT, three in Tasmania and one in the Northern Territory.

Swine flu continued to spread around the world, with confirmed cases in at least seven countries and 152 deaths in the source country, Mexico. Of those, 20 have been confirmed as swine flu.

In the United States confirmed cases more than doubled to 44. Canada has six cases, Scotland two, Spain and Israel
one each. Eleven other countries have suspected cases, although so far no one has died outside Mexico.

Mexican Health Minister, Jose Angel Cordova, said he hoped the epidemic there might be abating as the number of deaths went from six on Saturday to five on Sunday and three on Monday.

The World Health Organisation raised its influenza pandemic alert overnight from level three to four on its six-rank scale
- assessing a global pandemic as likely but not inevitable. Raising the pandemic alert is expected to lessen plane travel
- which pushed down the demand for oil yesterday and, consequently, the price of petrol, which analysts said could mean a five-cent-a-litre price drop in the next fortnight.

In other developments:

- Australians were warned to reconsider travel to Mexico in an upgraded travel advisory.

- Vaccine manufacturers suggested it would take nine to 10 weeks to develop a swine flu vaccine, as experts warned such
a move was vital if people developed resistance to the anti-viral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.

- GPs reported being inundated with requests for the normal seasonal flu vaccine.

- Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke urged Australians not to fear eating pork, as other nations halted pork imports -
despite WHO advice that it was safe to eat.

- A delegation of federal MPs cut short a study trip to Mexico.

Australian Medical Association Victoria president Dr Doug Travis advocated the wider use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers and reminders for workers to wash their hands often and cover their mouths while coughing or sneezing.

Dr Harry Hemley, AMA Victoria’s vice-president, said businesses should develop "pandemic preparedness plans".

These could include working from home, postponement of social functions and the use of staggered hours so employees
could avoid peak hour on public transport.

Professor William Rawlinson, a senior medical virologist at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital, said it was important for a
vaccine to be developed quickly.

What the World Health Organisation has to say about the flu.....7 deaths.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/wh...0429-amlk.html

Quote:
WHO says only seven confirmed swine flu deaths

* April 29, 2009 - 11:21AM

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.

Reports have put the likely death toll from the virus at 152, with Mexican officials confirming 20 deaths.

The number of cases under observation in Mexico alone has reportedly reached 1,614.

But Vivienne Allan, from WHO's patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.

"Unfortunately that (150-plus deaths) is incorrect information and it does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organisation," Ms Allan told ABC Radio on Wednesday morning.

"That figure is not a figure that's come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico."

Ms Allan said WHO had confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the Americas, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada, two in Spain, two in the UK and three in New Zealand.

Ms Allan said it was difficult to measure how fast the virus was spreading.

She said a real concern would be if the flu virus manifested in a country where a person had had no contact with Mexico, and authorities were watching all countries for signs of that.

"There is no pattern that has emerged at this stage to be able to say that it is spreading in a particular way or it is spreading into a particular country ... the situation is continuing to evolve," she said.

She said the WHO was not recommending against overseas travel, but urged those who felt sick to stay home and others to ensure they kept their hands clean.

No decision had yet been made about vaccinations.

"This virus is not airborne, it's caused by droplets ... so it's not a time for worry. It's a time to be prepared," Ms Allan said.

I saw i the news last night that Egypt want to kill every single pig in the country.

A guy on the radio said today those masks are a waste of time, when you breath in them the moisture in your breath eventually makes them redundant.

At the moment, the number of people infected with this Virus are few.

Unless precautions are taken, without a vaccine it could spread widely.
By taking the current steps, its spread will be limited. No doubt it will be added to next year's flu vaccine - then it will cease to be a threat.

meteorites, tsunamis, bird flu, guinea pig flu, vampires, pyramid schemes... every 6 months our media outlets seize on another doomsday event to bolster their income and run with it. Goverment agencies have no alternative but to act as these event "potentially" may have an impact on our lives. Blah blah blah.......
