I thought like this when I was 13.

I work for what I have as well & don't know anyone personally who has been on welfare, BUT the fact remains that sometimes people get screwed by circumstances out of their control & not helping them is just the wrong thing to do.

Of course people will abuse the system, but that happens with every system.

we've been on the bones of our a$$ a few times, but i've always found a better paying job to help with the lifestyle we prefer. whether that meant moving to a new town or city, so be it.
my point is you're in charge of your life, make changes to it if you don't like it, you shouldn't expect others to do it for you.
as you can see, i'm not a socialist. i've worked damn hard for what we have, so why should i share?
OK then. Hows this for an idea?

My ex walked out on me and my two kids 7 years ago. My son is now 7 and a half and my daughter is nearly 11. When he left I was studying full time. My choice was to continue studying on the Pension, or to give up my studies and take a job that was never going to pay all that well... I decided on the former... and for a year I lived on the Pension with my kids... and for the last two years, when things were more settled and my son was older, I got full time work while I was studying, when I had gotten my head around things...

Now I can tell you for a fact, that without the safety net of the Pension, I would have thrown my studies away because there was no way in Hell I was in any kind of state to work enough to support me, a newborn and a 4 year old at the time... I just couldnt have done it. But having that safety net enabled me to get through that year, continue with my studies, finish my law degree and get a job.

Now, 7 years later, I have a job that pays more than I ever would have if I could not have continued studying, and I wouldnt have had that if it were not for the welfare safety net. And so now I am paying massive amounts of tax BACK into the system, Im in the top tax bracket.

If the Pension had not been an option, I wouldnt be paying top bracket tax to the government... So Id like to say THANK YOU to all the taxpayers who paid for my Pension when I needed it, and Id also like to point out that Ive repaid it many times over, and will in the years to come... hows that for a return for the taxpayers dollar?????

So before you bag people on welfare, how about you think about how it helps people get jobs (and pay tax) and get better jobs (and pay more tax) and that has got to be good for the community! Not everyone has circumstances go their way in life, and sometimes we need the safety net...Im not saying everyone deserves it and that there are no bludgers... but I am just saying that not everyone has a choice, and that part of being in a SOCIETY means that the stonger help the less fortunate when they need it... its what makes us different to animals.... helping others help themselves....

So thanks SO much for paying taxes for me, but dont forget, Im paying taxes now much more than most taxapayers and ONLY because I could get the pension in the first place.

Lesson: dont judge everyone who is on welfare...and dont begrudge people help. Id rather be broke than selfish and bitter....

nak351 ....... I too have worked all my life ... well since I was 13 ........ I have paid all my taxes & have done everything to keep my children in one piece after a very nasty split from my ex, whom by the way, I will let you know left me bankrupt .......... I cannot live a normal existance wherever I want to ...... My children & I live in fear every day of their father finding us ......

I am NOT rorting the system & am trying to claw my way back into earning a real wage so we can survive without the handouts as you call them from the government.

To have people like yourself, how have obviously NO idea of what it is like to not know what you are going to feed your children because you have had utilities to pay & then tell me to go get a job I say .....Dont cast the first stone .... matey your glass house will break ........

My children are all of the one father( a term I loosly use) and I am no dole bludger .............. I have come in 3yrs from us having two changes of clothes each to living an almost at poverty line existance ............. Yes we have a computer & yes we have a TV ........ I drive a EB wagon ......... I can tell you living like this is not how I want to live nor how I will live forever ........

XRchick & MN : I don't think any of us would want to go through all of what you guys have been through. There are people that deserve help but for every one of those there must be nine others that have no desire to do any better and leech off the rest of us. Its these people that shit me.

MN i am not saying you are, was simply making a reasonably constructive comment, I do not judge people till I know them, as every circumstance is different, everyone deserves benifit of the doubt, again you are on the good side of the fence

Rethink the bolded section.

Thats the best thing about the forums. Everyone has their own opinion. I'm happy to hear anyone out, its just when people force it down my throat (which I'm not implying you are) that I get annoyed. All this stuff on tv with tsunami this, tsunami that, is getting tiring.

From the way the news is going it seems we're the only country other than USA which is doing anything.

....did we get off topic here lol.

True shit happens in life and some people need a helping hand others can manage on their own, i make my comments as growing up as a kid iv'e been on both sides of the fence. Both parents working and only eating toast as thats all they could afford, they never accepted handouts and made their own way through life. Things got worse and the old man took a risk and started his own business and over the last 10 years has wroked 70 hours a week to make sure i had food to eat and the things i wanted. And now doesn't need to work but does because he never wants me or my sisters to have a hard life like he did.

I live in an area that has 4 housing commision sites near by, 95% of these people are a breed of their own. They think the world ows them everything, at a minimum the goverenment. Why would they want to work when they can sit at home and earn more than your basic wage.

I have no problem with opinions I just felt that he wasn't speaking for me.

Anyway this thread is over for me. The reason I stayed away from the "general" sections of the old site were threads like this that just create stress for no reason.

Back to talking about cars for me

My comments arn't directed at anyone here on the forums just a rant out loud on how i feel about the subject in whole. How can people be on the dole for one for years at a time, it's not that hard to find a job. Anything is better than nothing.

Btw how does a women who just got a $35o,ooo payout from a dirvorce and gets to keep the house still get to claim unmarried mother's pension ($2oo odd a week) & child support from the father.

After receiving a decent payout after a redundancy and being out of work for a while, i can easily see how that much could be swallowed up in bills esp where a mortgage and kids is concerned.

Check the capitals of Caring,Understanding, Nice,Type. And to finish off how many people have got their property insured for what it's really worth, not many as most will under insure themselve's. Whatever happened to the Aussie mateship where if someone was down on their luck,we rallied round and helped out.I just hope that those of you who say too bad, don't ever fall on hard times because I will not give you any help whatsoever. You are not what Oz is about.

some people are so ignorant its almost comical. If you are never subsidised when you are just starting out 90% of people wont get anywhere. lets say back when i was 17 i got kicked out of home. I cant afford to study and work part time, i cant afford to take a trade apprenticeship so my only option is to work full time stacking shelves at a supermarket just to survive. we'd have a whole generation of unskilled labourers.

and for ****s sake, stop watching A Current Affair. 99% of people on welfare ARE NOT BLUDGERS. get a clue.

Well you can always tell when it's dole day. Watch the population at the local pub jump 1oo% at 11am.

do you realise how long it takes for insurance to pay up if your house is burned down? where are these people supposed to live in the mean time?

So going to the pub makes you a bludger eh? nice logic. i suppose they should be out looking for jobs 24/7.

So if your living on handouts your first thought would be to head down the pub and get ****ed as soon as you get the money. You are fu*king kidding arn't you, these are the one's who claim to have it hard but instead are using the money to try and drown there worthless lifes at the bottom of a longneck. If i didn't have a job the last place you'd find me would be ****ing what money i had left away at the pub.

It's good to see my tax $$$ going to waste when you see half the local h/c population getting ****ed instead of trying to better their lifes.

Anyone here who has been on a pension please pipe up, did you head down the pub as soon as you got your money.

I think this thread has gone really off topic ........

I really dont think that it was intended as a slinging match and I never intended, with my original post for it to be.

Cant we all be grown ups & realise that not everyone has the opportunity to be wealthy .......... I say this comming from a background of hard working parents who gave us everything ... So yed I have seen both sides .....

I know there are elements out there that do live life just on the dole/ pension but not everyone is like that. There are obviously, as has been seen in this thread, those who do try their best to get on with it ............

Why do we have to bitch & bicker over who is best.......... makes me feel like Im in the school yard again with 'LittleJohhny' telling me his Dad has more money so hes a better person ..........................
