this is a basic transcript of what he says. maybe i am misunderstanding you, but he is not saying that crashing the focus into the wall at 200 kph is the equivalent of 2 cars hitting head on at 100 kph. he is suggesting that crashing at 120 mph has the same force whether the other object is a stationary concrete wall or an oncoming car doing 120 mph

this ford focus here is going to go on a little day trip into this concrete block at 120 mph. it is an extreme test that’s equivalent to the worst scenario imaginable. two cars colliding head on whilst both traveling at 120 mph

some people either don't listen or don't know the difference between 120kph and 120mph.

Not very relevant since this test was done at almost double that speed.

I think I would prefer to see 2 cars crash at 110KMH. That would be more relevant.

With the way many new cars have performance that wouldn't be out of place in a super car of twenty years ago, it helps to make people think a little.

I've done 200 twice on my old Kawasaki 750cc two-stroke triple, and 220 on my current GSX-1400 (on closed roads...test tracks...race tracks... ) and let me tell you, on a bike it makes you focus like buggery...what happens if the chain snaps? A Tyre blows? The engine siezes? I hit a big pothole? A too hops out?

Too many young guys (and older guys too) seem to plant the foot and revel in the speed, laughing like idiots, instead of giving it the concentration it deserves.

No..........moral of the story is not to let your store manikins steal your car because they will drive it into a concrete block at 120MPH.........Imagine explaining that to your insurance company.......

I didn't watch the youtube video, I watched the episode a week or so ago, but I'm sure the crash guy Fifth Gear employed correctly explained it as two vehicles closing in at 120mph.

Similar to what my mums 80 series landcruiser RV looked like about 10 years ago after we had a head on on the scenic route from Woolongong to Sydney.. Telstar TX-5 hit us head on coming down a slope - driver fell asleep or had a heart attack. His us at probably 90, we hit the brakes and were probably doing about 60 at impact. Snapped the bullbar clean in half, engine pushed back into firewall, dash and foot wells all buckeled in... Other driver didn't make it. The Telstar was torn open like a Pepsi can

The car hitting the wall at 200kph is equivalent to two cars travelling at 200kph each, then hitting each other dead on and being the exact same construction and mass. As each car absorbs the energy of the sudden deceleration itself, the video shows nothing more than a car hitting a wall at 200kph.
Which again, is why I say this is a completely pointless test.
Sort of like saying; "Hey, I'm gonna stick my willy in a meat grinder and see what happens". Pointless.

Exactly mate, a really pointless exercise. This video should not be used to gather data for real world crash scenarios as I would highly doubt seeing a crash involving 1 car travelling 200km/h into a concrete wall in the real world.

And if there were 2 cars involved instead of a concrete wall, the crash would have been very different as the second car would have absorbed just as much energy as the first car (asuming the cars are the same make/model etc).

This is more of a "mmm what if" scenario....

I dont think it will be used to gather info for anything. I also dont think it was pointless as it shows you what can happen in extreme circumstances.

People are reading WAY too much into this 'test' I dont think it was done for any gain or crash test info, i mean look how many cameras and data points are on a proper crash test car. This one had nothing it was for pure 'shock' factor and as i said above to show the worst case scenario.

Spot on. Whether there's a single scrap of scientific data than can be gleaned from this test isn't the point. For me, the point of the exercise is in the observation of the video......here's what happens if you're really hammering along and you hit something. Whether its 180kph or 210kph or whatever, its academic. Long story short, you're dead, and your next of kin won't even have a body to identify at the morgue. You'll have to be removed from the car with a paintscraper.

Hard not to think of that when doing above 60 down a road that has poles right on the curb.
