How many driving lessons have you guys had before you all went for your licences? I'm 17 and I've had 30 already.

Not sure how 'well before' you mean... when my dad got his licence (50+ years ago), he went down to the local police station... the copper asked him how he got to the station, he told them he drove... and that was it. Licensed.

Although, seeing him drive... maybe he should have had lessons and taken the test.

Similar to my Pop, he drove the local officer around for a few house calls and that was it

I reckon rather than forcing restrictions on P platers (Bullet proof vest and flame suit on)........ They should force us to have driving lessons and do defensive driving courses (at our own cost).

Therefore, tax payer doesn't pay anything and we all win with better drivers and no car restrictions.

mmm to be honest i had about 12 driving lessons. not bloody cheap either, considering i was just 16/17 and working part time out of school... it is a trivial matter, but these things happen. when i first got my license even i will admit to doing some dumb , but that was over a year ago, and the amount of knowledge you pick up in 1 year is amazing. in my life im at a stage where i cannot afford to lose my license. its more or less everything! cant get to work = cant pay the bills+rent = cant live. simple enough. Dont do dumb things imo. (18, no demerits as of yet)

My driving test was to take the Sergeant to the river, drive down a dirt track and then a boat ramp so he could check his crab pot, reverse buck up the ramp and track and then drive back to the station.

But I grew up in the bush and was driving when I was 14.

Mine was once around the median stripped country town square, on my way back from a working holiday at a farm. 5 minutes driving all up, 20 minutes to get the licence written out. I had been driving trucks, cars, combine harvestors and tractors since I was 12 so I knew how to drive pretty well.

With my kids, I bought a charade each time, put them in it and allowed them to hit trees in the bush until they learnt how to ride the clutch, use peripheral vision, stop a slide, avoid impacts, do circle work, etc... after two weeks of getting the stupidity out of their systems they went for their test and passed no problems.

These days Qld learners have to accumulate points.

I've got to rack up 120 hours, with at least 10 hours at night time and in rain, but what I don't get is that I have no vehicle restrictions at all, but a P plater does? Lol, should just stay on my Ls and get a fast car to drive around with Dad on the weekends haha.

I cant see how a driving instructor can judge how safe you will be as a driver during a half an hour driving test. This is not to say the test has no merit, but that i beleive lowering the road toll depends little on making the test harder and more on long term education of drivers.

Some of the best engineers i know did miserably at uni, some of the worst were honours students. The way you learn and the way you deal with real situations can be vastly different.
I think awareness is one of the biggest contributors to accidents, i dont really know how you teach that...

I'm still a P-plater through my own stupidity.
Loss of license 6 times. 4 times for fine default. The other 2 well, I'd rather not say on a public forum.
I got my blacks, but ended up in court with 2 options, re-do my green P's or loose my license for 12months.
The new job I got I need my car license, so I took option A.
Ive driven my XR8 around both hooning and grandma pace, with and without P plates on. No plates and hooning, ha don't even get looked at, grandma pace nothing!
P-plates at grandma pace you get jumped all over. P-plates and hooning your life isn't worth living.
I just think its wrong that P-platers are targeted how they are and that the rules are a joke!

They should test awareness while driving by involving science, get the kids to drive around, then again at them sitting on 100km/h for 20-30 minutes. Record awareness of the person, then do it again after giving them ADD medication, I wonder how that would go.

Defensive driving course I would have to agree. But the lessons I can't agree on because they're only teaching people how to pass a test and not how to drive. I didn't take a single lesson and I passed the new tests (Victoria) but I did have 140hours driving experience while on my Ls. I have seen the most atrocious driving from instructors and they're teaching people to look in there rear view mirror when braking. Why the ... should you be looking in your rear view mirror when braking? You should be looking where you're going so you don't run into the car in front of you or run out into the intersection and get T-boned. When i'm approaching an intersection what the guy behind me is doing is the last thing i'm concerned about.

Eventually it's going to get to the point where you only get 3 demerit points on your Ps and the demerit points for going 1km/h over the speed limit is 3 demerit points. It's getting really ridiculous no wonder so many P platers are losing there licences.

My son came home the other night (on red P's) and told my wife and i that he just been pulled over by the Wollopers, his mate had his arm out the window, anyway they gave him a breath test (the talk into one) and the coper tells him he failed and how much he has had, my son tells him he hadn't been drinking but the cop would have not of this and kept badgering him to fess up to what he had been drinking, apparently this went on for some time when my son turn around to this upstanding member of our community that he wants a blood test down, the coper turns to him ans said no i'll give you a breath test (blow into tube) which he passed, the first test was giving a false reading from his mate who he just picked up from the pub, but the coper just wouldn't believe my son hadn't been drinking, but on a better note he was picked up for 5-6 k's over the limit not far from home (60k area) coper let him off with a warning to take it easy, the police officer tells him he was young once and knows what it's like , so theres the 2 sides of the coin (good cop bad cop)

Low speed manoeuvres??? No! Instant fail for speeding! Get out of here! Hour long test? Somebody think of the children!

Seriously, as every man and his dog has mentioned MANDATORY DRIVER TRAINING IS THE ONLY WAY!!!!! Put kids in a car with bald tyres and bad suspension, teach them that a car like that is a death trap. Put said kid and car into an emergency lane change situation and watch them crap themselves when they can't control the car. Put them in a good car with good suspension and good tyres. Once again, put said kid and car into the same emergency situation. Watch them crap themselves when they can't control the car.

When things like that are taught in a controlled environment, drivers who think they are ten foot tall and bullet proof tend to become a little sheepish when they are shown they aren't as good as they think they are. Combined with the appropriate theory modules and defensive driving modules, a course like that sets drivers up to become a more focussed, aware and SAFE driver.

Thanks for the laugh, I really needed that .

I wouldn't mind being put into those tests, it'd be a good test of my so called "abilities". Someone has to create the laws for it and I don't see the government giving a fat rats clacker about it unfortunately, because remember speed cameras save lives, not driver training!

The test isn't nearly as hard as some people make it out to be. If the new one is hard the one before must have easy.
I have to agree I think a Defensive Driving course should be mandatory for all drivers not just P Platers. I've had my Ps for 3 months and i'm looking at doing a Defensive Driving course ASAP.

i am a P-plater myself, well at least until 8th december this year so about 2 weeks away from full licence..then i can be finally rid of this branded "HOON" name all over me..I am not a hoon, i'll admit i mucked up a bit when i was just starting driving as about every teenage boy does when he gets his hands on a car, but one simple mistake that got involved with the police straightened me out and for the past 3 years of being a P plater i have barely done anything that would be considered "hooning"

You want to stop hoons??? simple sollution..extreme restrictions on power of the vehicle, that means NO V8's...NO V6's..NO Turbo or Supercharged 4 Cylinders either...

Trust me if the only car P platers could drive had 4cylinder engines..i doubt there will much hooning going on, when a 4cylinder motor could barely spin a wheel to do a burnout, drift, or even have enormous acceleration speed..

You can spin the wheels in a 4 cylinder too, I managed to spin the front right wheel on take-off in Dad's 2003 Mazda 323. Also, any car can go fast in a straight line.

Well i know i live in frankston so im like in the capital of d*#@heads, but here (and no im not taking a stab at holdens just because im a ford fan) but yes its always and i mean always Holdens down here that are doing the hooning..with a few occasional rice burners..lol

4Vman, it's lose not loose. Not the first time i've corrected your thread title spelling!

Also,

Don't rag out on the P platers too much. Old fella at my work (he's gotta be nearing 60 surely) told me he was listening to talkback radio the other day about 'these pesky, irresponsible P-platers' and people were calling in saying 'in my day, people didn't lose their licence, people were respectful and careful and blah blah blah' and my mate at work said he instantly thought 'i don't know where these guys grew up, but i'd lost 3 mates to road accidents of their own doing by the time I was 25! the only reason no-one lost their licence is because there was no such thing as drink driving laws! if there were, half the people on the road wouldn't have had licences!'

And I thought, finally. An old bloke who hasn't lost his memory, doesn't rag out on 'young blokes' and knows what life was really like.

So, 'keeping to the speed limit' is 'driving to the conditions'?

Consider; I'm out on the open road, say at 130km/h, it might be a 100-110km/h road. I would suggest I'm 'driving to conditions', since I do so, but am doing so at illegal speed, because - an aluminium sign has numerals saying it is so.

On the same road once, I sat at speeds up to 170km/h, legally. Safe at point of operation too.

Too much 'speed-limit conditioning' in Australia.

47 per day lose their licence? Wow. On the flip side, I guess that's 47 P platers guaranteed not to kill or maime other road users (unless they ignore the cancellation, of course). Anyone else notice how when a P plate car is involved in a fatal, it is usually NOT the driver who dies?
