Yeah, what he said haha this is what i meant.

I know some of you have mentioned you dont believe in sports people being a hero as such. However, my view is that its not about their sporting achievements as such. But who they are as people.

Take Lance Armstrong for example. He's an elite athlete, the best of the best. He won the Tour De France once and was diagnosed with a very severe strain of testicular cancer and lost nearly everything. He was given about a 20% chance to survive, the cancer spread elsewhere in his body. He had to have a testicle amputated. After a number of years away from cycling he returned having overcome the cancer. He then went on to win the Tour De France 7 consecutive times.

He proved than no matter how bad things are, even if you lose everything, if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything and everything

this is why he is my hero.

sportsmen can't be heroes my ****. lol

I have a few heroes, real & fictious:

- Henry Ford. He is a hero to me simply because he believed in the idea that an automobile should be affordable to the common man, not reserved just for the super elite. His ideas created one of the very foundations todays society is based upon.

- The scientists of the Renaissance eg: Newton, Galileo, DaVinci. Nerdy as that is, we have them to thank for the Modern Age.

- I wont mention my political heroes, id rather not spark a debate.

- And I wont mention my fictious heroes either, id rather not be picked on for it.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

The brave men and women who fought and died in the Armed Forces protecting the way of life we enjoy today. Lest We Forget.

I never said sportsmen can't be heros I said their sporting acheivements don't make them a hero.
If a sportsman risked life and limb unselflishly to save other people that would make them a hero.
If they won a game against all odds that is not heroic it is doing their job just like any other employee. that would be like me being called a hero because I recovered data for a customer when everyone else had tried and was unsucsessful. can you see the stupidity in that scenario? well calling someone a hero for winning a game they are employed to play is just as stupid.

the worst thing about hero worshiping sportsmen is we seem to worship the most moronic , the ones who think they can play life by a different set of rules take Shane Warne as an example.

Not only every man and woman who died saving a country we love so much, but the people who also made it home, mentally and or physically traumitized so that we can live in peace.

I hang my head low in awe of feats achieved unattainable by most, yet done so by people just like us.

lest we forget.

Thanks for the addition there is also a name missing because he never received the VC he deserved due to a clerical error, John Simpson Kirkpatrick AKA Simpson with his donkey. A truly heroic man in the ANZAC tradition(I mentioned his name earlier but thought more detail was appropriate)

so bearing in mind these people have different beliefs to us, a suicide bomber would be a hero then, because they have given their life for their people/beliefs

most people in this country do not do their job properly in the first place. someone rising to the top level of any sport has sacrificed the things most people take for granted and so deserve some form of admiration (depending on other personality traits)

i do agree with your point on making heroes of undeserving people - however everyone has the right to choose a personal hero based on who inspires them and if it happens to be a sportstar or whatever, then so be it

sports stars in sporting arenas are idols, not heroes. Heroes are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

As said by someone earlier, i didnt word the original question all that well, it should have been more generic including idol's mentor etc etc
Also, everyone has a different view on who is a hero and what being a hero means.

no A suicide bomber takes life where the risk a hero takes is to prevent death or injury to others so the tag of hero can never really apply to terrorist

It's fair enough to admire a sportsman for their acheivements but this is still not a heroic selfless act. They guys are doing it either for lots of money or the potential to make lots of money in the future this is not an act of self sacrifice it is a commercial venture.
I don't have an issue with the admiration of sportsmen but calling them heros only degrades the term , hero should be reserved for the likes of our VC recipients and people who risk life and limb to save others

they are considered heroes in their own country - or are those people like me; not worthy of choosing our own heroes. it is amazing though - the people you consider heroes were fighting a war to protect our freedom; and yet you wish to take away people's freedom to choose their own heroes. doesn't really make much sense to me

you worship who you want, and i will worship who i want - and if you read my first post in this thread, you will see that my list includes the people from yours - it is just a little broader to reflect my own personal tastes and views
