if i had a choice between a 'stang and a 'con, id honestly be choosing the mustang. V8 with a manual is the combo i'd want in a mustang.

I didn't say they were never fitted with 6's.

I just said that to my way of thinking if it's a Mustang it has to have a V8 and the sound that goes with it.

So the XR Falcon became what was basically a Mustang which was basically a Falcon.

The Falcon has always been a Falcon. Robert McNamara was President of Ford when the Falcon was first introduced. And he is known as the Father of the Falcon. He was also known as the wiz kid. Or one of the whiz kids while working as execs for Ford after WWII. And really made something of Ford then.

If he's the Father of the Falcon... and was a very smart man. You can see why it's always been great.

Lee Iacocca was the father of the Mustang, it took 450,000 sales in its first 12 months and went on to displace Falcon.

My 69 Mach 1 has basically identical mechanicals to Falcon of the day. Having an old ZA Fairlane some years ago and now this Mustang, the similarities are obvious.

For the Mustang line this went really only to 1973. In 74 when Mustang II was introduced, it was quite a bit smaller (size of Ford Capri), was available in 4 cyl and really diverged away from the Falcon/Mustang size and mechanicals. Mustang has grown since 74 but even the current Mustang is not as long as the 73 version.

Falcon on the other hand continued along the same line and you could argue has never changed its original concept like Mustang did in 74. Even the mechanicals have been more of a continual development rather than a drastic change. Sure there have been some major revisions, EA & BA the most notable. Before these, right up through XD,XE,XF there were still a hell of a lot of similarities to the original Falcons.

So whilst the current Mustang and Falcon seem poles apart now, they certainly had a virtually identical beginning. I think the current Falcon is probably more true to the original Falcon concept. The Mustang has chopped and changed a fair bit over the years but with 5th gen has gone back to it's roots...finally.

I hope you're not suggesting that anyone who disagrees with your views a Falcon hater...

We all want different things from Falcon, some want it to progress and become something quite different,
some want it to stay the same and preserve the lineage by keeping the things that made Falcon great
and some just don't care about new stuff because they have their classic Falcon out the back in their shed....

Different strokes for different folks..

I have had a steer in both a FG I6 and a New mustang V6.
If I was parting with my cash, and they were similar in price, I would pick the FG.
Overall better car IMO, but the Mustang V6 sounds heaps batter then the I6

What I have to have a falcon to prove I'm Aussie? I'll bet I've owned more falcons then a lot here.
I have a German Focus FFS. The only thing that would draw me to falcon in my budget is the I6T but I don't like the rest of the car.
Just because I don't own a falcon doesn't mean I'm not a proud Aussie.

Dallas go for a wander up to Gympie and check out the new Mustangs. They look great from the outside but inside they are decades behind the FG.

As far as the 6 vs V8 Mustangs, in 2004 I was stuck in Vendalia OH on a wet and miserable day so I wandered off to the Ford dealer there who had about 50 new Mustangs in stock (he had over 100 explorers). Most of the Mustangs were V6 autos in bright colours and sold for about USD 17,000.
In the couple of hours I was they they sold at least 4 mustangs, all 6 cyl, all to very excited young girls accompanied by their parents.

Actually I just checked their website, they currently have 6 new model mustangs in stock and 5 are 6 cylinder ($24,995). (GFC is much worse there it seems)

Mustang II was a total flop wasn't it? I remember watching Clarkson say many years ago on Top Gear 'The new horrid fuel efficient model (Mustang II) which replaced it ('73 mustang) was so awful that we won't spoil your evening by showing it on television.'

Maybe i'm mis-interpreting what your saying but the original US Falcon was released in the late 50's in the US, Mustang wasn't out until 64, based on the Falcon platform.

I thought the XR Falcon was advertised as Mustang bred because of the 289, and the XT was more, more Mustang because of the 302.

I don't ever really recall the 66 XR being based on Mustang because at that time it was still the original Falcon based version, the 2nd gen Mustang wasn't released until 67, after the XR was released here in 66, and it wasn't much different from the original Falcon based 64 Mustang anyway.

I would say that the 66 XR evolved on it own and got much bigger than XP, whereas the Mustang sort of stayed the same until the bigger 69. Was the 69 based off the bigger Falcon by then?
