Temperature of the road
Gas pressure in the tyres (which is also temp dependent)
Load carried
Temperture of the rims

Your speedometer calculates indirectly from the number of rotations of your wheel per second.
If the wheel is wider because it has expanded you will travel further per rotation therefore your speedo will read lower.

To be 3% out of tollerence you need less than 0.5% increase in radius.
In the case of a standard falcon wheel with is about 65cm to be 3% out is a difference of about 3mm. How deep is your tread?

Of course those are Ford measurements, I am sure you will tell me that Holden measurements are faster and more accurate.......

But with the 3% they also ad 2kp/h on top. So @ 60 kp/h we are looking at 66kp/h that will get you caught.

My wheels are Back 225/60/R15. Front 205/65/R15.
I haven't had a speeding fine even by accident.
Again it's why Speedos are out too allow for wear deterioration of tyres rims conditions etc.

Of course holdens measurements are more accurate and faster why would you think other wise :

What state are you living in? Certainly not Victoria if you believe that rubbish.

In Victoria (what this thread is about) you get 3KPH leeway, thats IT! Thats 3% at 100kph, not 3%+2kph, just 3% (3kph @ 100kph). At 110kph leeway is actually 2.7%.

Mathamatics show that the difference between a new tyre and a tyre worn to the indicators (still legal but needing changing) is approx 2.5%

Now maybe your VP can drive with a tolerance of 0.5% but 99.9% of cars cant.. even cruise control on a Merc or BMW wont stay within 0.5% of a set speed (given that their indicated speed is perfect to start with which no car is).

Lets not forget something else..which I have proven with the help of the local boys in blue and their handheld guns.

It involved several passes with me doing everything I could to keep it at 60kph.

The thing that stood out is that the speedo needle is slower going up and coming down than your actual car speed.

This was for an AUII ute I6.

Did i mention i'm a speed camera operator (who hasnt worked a day yet). And the police set the speed too 2 kp/h above the 3% as always. Well they did last time i checked.
But ignore my name if possible for a min, And look deeper into what i am saying if you can, A falcon commodore speed always is 4+ kp/h lower then the indicated speed. Take into account years of abuse and disrespect too the car ad the 3% and the kp/h the cars are off and that is more then enough too over come getting a fine in a run down car. If you ad larger rims 2 your car have the speedo looked at simple. Or just don't speed that's always the best advice too not getting booked.
Geelong way they have a speed indicator on the way back too Melbourne.
Passed that in our old VB and VP. One night the whole family went too smorgies for mums birthday, We had a AUIII Falcon, VR Berlina Proton Gen2 VL Calais and my car.
First of all the VB 3 years ago registered 92 @ 100.
The AUIII clocked 96 @ 100. VR 95 @ 100. Proton 99 @ 100 it's got 17" rims. VL 101 @ 100 it's got 18" rims speedometer never been adjusted. My car was 95 @ 100.
Only 2 thats got close or over were the 2 cars with larger rims.
Too be honest you need too be doing 110+ in a 100 zone too be caught.
Last time i got a speeding fine was when i was 18.

Thanks, redxr, yeah i knew of the 10% leway for ADR but was referring to a national system that inforces that rather than victorias somewhat over the top 3%

i just find the irony that you can purchase a brand new vehicle and have an inaccurate speedo....... but manufacturers wont adjust it as its within the ADR. (fair enough too)
