Maybe you can compress it to a WinZip file. Couldn't help myself : I think it's about time for bed. 10hrs of work in near 40 degrees, no dinner and a lot of booze will do it!

I have been using Windows Vista for some time because i'm a microsoft and irix beta tester...and vista rocks especially under the 64 bit platform utilising the dual and quad amd/intel processors. The only issue so far was with Avid Pro 7.0 as it didn't support it, but other than that, it leaves winxp pro and winserver 2003 for dead. I have had no hardware issues except for older sound blaster cards that were left in some comps on the render farm. Once removed it wasn't an issue. The new networking architecture is a little bit different and takes time to get used to....but the system is faster/ more stable, and much better than any windows equivalent..this is based on 64bit processors although vista still supports 32bit (x86)for the older systems.

Cheers.

Agreed, firefox 7 is right on the money. This is no cosmetic upgrade. It's good news all the way.

Longhorn is early concepts of Vista. It's far more refined now. I'm certain you would no longer have an issue.

I was pretty suprised when i used it at how established it felt, so if longhorn is anything to go by vista should be a reasonable os.

Not sure that my comp will do it any justice though and i really don't want to upgrade so ill probably give it a go and if it goes bad ill go crawling back to linux.

Vista is like most new Microsoft OS's resource hungry. So if you aren't keen to upgrade hardware, stick with what your comfy with. Nothing wrong with Linux, at least it's honest. LOL

i have Vista installed on this machine as a dual boot. it was available direct from microsoft for a while, for people to beta test. not sure if that's still the case.. I haven't booted into it for weeks. The copy i have is very graphics intensive, with some benefits over xp, but all in all, very little is compatible with it at this point, so it's useless for me to try to deal with on a daily basis. Looks pretty swish, but i wouldn't lose any sleep over not having it.

Yes longhorn is the earlier version of vista. RC1 is the latest version which runs much nicer.

What are the security features of Vista like? Is it going to be played up as good as XP was and really be a disappointment or is it fairly secure?

Ive been an MS Vista Beta tester for the last 18 months, and I'm now running the Final Retail Version of Vista Ultimate (beta testers got a free full retail copy for their efforts!) and I have to say people that say "I wont be using it for at least a year" really have no idea....what are their reasons?

The only thing is driver support will take maybe a few months to get up to scratch, but every piece of hardware I have runs perfectly.

And those hardware requirements posted previously are for Vista Ultimate...the lesser versions have less hardware requirements...

Processor: 800 MHz
Memory : 512MB
GPU : SVGA (800x600)
HDD : 20GB
HDD Free : 15GB

I use it as my only OS now...I have a dual bot with XP, so that XP is there as a backup for anything I cant use in Vista (which at this point are only Tiger Woods 2007 due to nVidia drivers not being perfect yet, and installing new Windows ROMS on my PDA which doesnt work in Vista).

I've never bought an operating system in my life *cough cough* but if I hadn't received this free copy, I was actually going to buy it, I like it that much!

The Windows Vista Transformation Pack is a lot like buying a Falcon GLi and putting Farimont badges on it. It just looks different, as far as the actual core, it's the same. It basically puts all the pretty colours on, but in the end you still have a much more tacky looking Windows XP. Whilst that is my personal opinion, it rings true a little bit.

Unfortunatly im not running linux at the moment i was running fedora core 5 not long ago but i was starting to get over it being a mainstream fully configured os out of the box it kind of makes life hard when you need extra packages and it doesn't want to accept them or upgrade its own list of dependencies. But as you said at least its honest .

So they actually packaged into the OS a anti spyware program. It's about time.

It's due for release Jan 30 '07 at this stage. I will be grabbing a copy, I liked the RC1 and 2 earlier builds. And most OEM hardware manufacturers will have driver support ready by then. So the transition in theory should be fairly painless. Bring it on.

Bloody Vista, piece of cake to install. Ran it for about a week(RC2) but there is not a single driver out there yet to suit those of us that use widescreen computer monitors. Mine requires 1440 x 900, even with the correct monitor drivers installed, the highest goes from 1280 x 1024 to 1920 x1080 which are suited to Home Theatre PC use! 1440 x 900 where are you?

i'm just using RC1, i didn't bother with RC2.. how many bugs are in it now ? I read IT press releases saying apparently there were still over 2000 known issues in RC1..

mate i'm running a 19" widescreen at 1440x900, with Vista and i've had no issues. I'm just using generic drivers too, didn't even bother installing the nvidia Vista beta drivers. Not sure what the issue is there ? It was always an option in the settings menu.

Strange, I went browsing forums worldwide and I lost count how many other Vista users had the same problem. Me needs more info......

It (Ultimate) runs "ok" on my A7N8X(DLX) + xp2500 (oc'd 3200) + 1.5GB ddr3200 + Ti4200 vid + 2 x 120GB SATA + 19" Dell.

No issues other than network drivers (that box is still not connected to internet).

As mentioned by someone there's little doubt that Ultimate will run much better on a 64 bit sys with dual core cpu. If I get the time I'll build one up over xmas and see how it travels.

maybe it was an issue with RC2 ? not sure.

for those talking about pc specs, vista rates your computer and gives you a score. you can then use this score to buy products (which i assume if MS have their way, will all have a vista 'rating' on the box)

Thanks for that, i've got an asus A8V with an athlon 64 3500+, 1gig ddr400 ram, geforce 6600 and 80gb 7200rpm hdd on PATA for the operating system and 150gb 7200rpm hdd on SATA for everything else so it should chug along ok, might be worth chucking another 2 512's in though.

it'll work ok with that setup. you can change the 'pretty' bits too, to make it run better.
