I watched the episode of 60 minutes that had this Part on it ... Richard was only allowed to be in the actual plant breifly because of the radiation that still remains in that plant.

We had to study it for Society + Environment last year ... The teacher sort of explained to us that they were doing a routine clean out of the plant when a worker/cleaner 'accidentley' hit a button or something alike on the big board.

The same class reactor runs in about 4-5 other locations in Ukraine as well as a few other former Soviet-brother countries.

Kiev has a magnificent museum dedicated to those that perished. It pulls no punches in the way that the Soviet system and its accompanying mindset sent lambs to the slaughter both during and after the accident. All in the name of "saving face".

Wonderfull people, wonderful country - screwed over by a system that will take a generation or more to fix.
Lithuania is the only country left running an RBMK reactor, and it's slowly being decommisioned before they're allowed into the EU.

It's amazing how the Soviets didn't care for the people around the reactor, or the heroes that helped extinguish the fires, or dumped dolomite and sand onto the core to stop it radiating. Theres a few videos on you tube of helicopter pilots flying over, they were dead in 15 minutes.. theres one crashing into the fuel crane as well..

such a sad thing...

Yes ive finished that one, its a bit **** after you actually get to chernobyl though. Its got that eerie feeling to it sometimes especially in dark places with twisted screams faintly in the background.

Cool thread, i think chernobyl has that 'car crash' thing to it... its horrific, a typical example of man being too good for himself... but cant look away. On the topic of Stalker, it does an amazing job of capturing the eeriness one may expect in an abandoned fallout zone. If you have a high end pc, check it out for sure.

Plenty of great docos about it floating around... the ones that focus on the building of the sarcophagus (spelling?) are incredible. Believe it was primarily military, put the suit on - go build for a few minutes, come back for replacement. And still, so many of the poor buggers died.

Was under the impression it was a test of emergency cooling systems.. ie shut the cooling system down. But there was a big element of "man" involved. Something wasnt right, or they failed to check something.

Yeah more or less. It was a combination of the reactor having design faults because it was rushed (humans are greedy $$$) plus inexperienced operators and the person in charge going against normal procedures.

It's done a lot of damage around Europe, and I don't expect they will know the full side-effects for at least another few years. In any case, they probably won't ever reveal the whole truth anyway. They've covered up enough already - and that includes France, Belarus, Romania, Greece, and pretty much every other country affected.

I hope Australia pursues a different way of generating power.

Well id say thats why its on the forefront now due to there thinking of building a nuclear reactor in australia because we already got most of the worlds fuel for it. I reckon use sun power and wind power i know that its no viable right now but we got ****loads of unused desert for those new fancy solar panels surly we can set some of them up in large quantities?

Yeah, but unfortunately it's all about cost and feasibility though. Ideally we'd live in a world run by the sun (solar power) but the cost for nuclear energy is cheap and loads of power can be generated from it - they also claim there is enough uranium etc to outlast humans. There's many grey areas, and many arguments for the use of it as well as the opposing view. I just think the highest cost is the Earth/nature.

Well, today marks the 21st anniversary of the accident.

A few days ago I acquired a Discovery Channel documentary called The Battle Of Chernobyl. Rather than talk about the lead up to the accident and what actually happened, it discusses what happened afterwards like the cleanup, political silence, the spread of the radioactive cloud over Europe, building the sarcophagus, etc. They interview various military people who lead the various stages of the cleanup, Mikhail Gorbachev and also a woman who lived in Pripyat as a child when the accident happened.

The documentary says it uses footage, photos and documentation that was kept quiet by the government for 15 years after the accident. For example, the official death toll was said to be less than 50. This documentary now puts it closer to 20,000 with 200,000+ affected by the radiation.

Sites like mininova have a torrent for it. For those interested in the subject I can highly recommend this documentary.

I have seen documentry also on Discovery looking at mutation regarding chernobyl stating there is no link between it and birth defects...merely because there was a concentrated look for them...they found them...They tested animals in the immiediate surrounds of the facility and found there was no DNA changes....Im not saying its not as bad as it is....but this documentry was quite eye opening..I Wish i could remember more.....Also talked about radiation levels we all are subjected to higher levels in the atmosphere in reagrds to Flying....Also specific levels of Radiations being beneficial..Ie Preventing Cancer and such

Yeah its so cheap and relatively 'safe' now, but its the same as a high end car, you can have as many airbags as you want, but in a high speed crash you'll be lucky to come out with your life, same goes here, you can have as many failsafes and guarantees as you want, its that 1 in a million odd that everyone is worried about.
They also rekon because we have so much unused space Australia should be accepting everyone elses Nuclear waste to store in the desert, apparently its 'our global duty'.

Shows a little bit of life after the incident, with the new water pipes running above ground.

Not Chernobyl but an interesting soviet Ghost town none the less.
