Seriously that review says the BRZ is the divers car, are you getting it yet??
Did you watch the bit on the race track or just the mountain road?

And yes, even though its just-a-six [with 305BHP!] i would rather the Mustang, its a mean looking beast, God bless America!

The only thing the 86 has is good balance and a cheap price. They even claimed to put skinny tyres and deliberately non grippy rubber on it to make it easier to drive. But more likely cause it was cheaper.
If they put wider and gripper type tyres [usa tires] it *may* struggle to bag-them-up....

I still cannot work out what all the fuss is about it, you guys are easily pleased!

All the fuss is about the fact that at that price point there is no other car like it - as much fun as it - as much of a drivers car as it, on the market. Thats the start and end of it. Not a difficult concept to grasp. Doesn't mean eveyone must want one. All it means is anyone with half a clue about cars would acknowledge its significance for the industry and Toyota, feel good that in todays climate of FWD econoboxes a car like this is still posible, then move on.

I'd prefer a V8 Mustang as well, but why compare the 86 to a car thats in a different genre, in a different market, at a different price point? ZERO relevance!!

The ignorance / arrogance on here is amazing.

There is no sports car for the same price as this (brand new) that offers the same performance.

No, the place to talk about it is here, on fordforums.com.au in the Pub. This forum is for all discussion, about all makes of car, for all people whos common interest is Ford. Not a forum for Ford people to talk about Fords, and nothing else but Ford, and bag out any other car that has a different badge.

Just rading on there actually, that over there, if you place an order now for a BRZ, you can expect delivery in March or April next year.

Good real world comparissons in there. The guy had a 590atw hp GT-r, 1:26 lap was his fastest, 450 hp C63 1:29, first time in his FR- S 1:35. Not to far off considering the price, and the amount of power.

yep had a go today in the mother in laws new car - auto GTS. for some background info, it's the first 'sports' car i have driven so my opinion might not hold much weight, and considering i drive a VE SSV commodore or my wife's hyundai ix35 most cars would seem sporty and have good handling

the ft86 had a massive 270k's on the clock

there are no nice twisty mountain roads where i am (if someone knows of one on the northern end of the central coast i'm all ears), so i went for a short blast around an industrial estate.

the car seems very direct in the steering, ride is pretty hard (not bad/uncomfortable for the 15 minutes i was in it) feels like a go-kart with a roof.

i was expecting a 'power band' effect with the motor while revving out through the gears but it never came, just a flat power delivery. because it's a boxer motor i was waiting for the turbo rush and BOV noise, but that didn't happen either :(

auto seems ok. didn't drive much just in 'D'. there is the 'normal' gear selector, park, reverse, neatral, drive, then move across into sports/tiptronic mode. the one time i had it just in drive it had me in 6th gear at 70kph, and whe you hit the throttle to speed up with traffic or approaching a small incline it would go back through the gears.

flappy paddles are fun, until you get half way through a corner and have to think about where the up paddle is because the wheel is turned, i used the gear stick so i didn't hit the wrong paddle, i guess you would get more used to it if you owned the car. there seemed to be a delay between hitting the paddle and the gears changing, not much of a delay though. could seem more of a delay because i usually drive a manual and the last auto i had a blast in was a bf typhoon. the gearbox/motor gives a nice throttle 'blip' on downshifts and sounds awesome..

seats are nice and supportive, radio reception sucked. i tuned it into triple j and then turned it off because of the static, i haven't had any problems getting triple j on any other radio here.

the reverse camera didn't work so the car has to go back to get fixed, would have thought someone from toyota would found that, as the car was only picked up on friday.

i have already put first 'dibs' on the car for when she sells it, hopefully she doesn't keep it for too long and it doesn't hold it's value too well (because i know my ss won't ) and it'll need a turbo kit fitted

Had a first drive on the weekend. If anyone has had or driven a S13 Silvia with a SR20DE (not T) motor, has a very similar feel (only every thing is about 20-30% better). Build quality wasn't exceptional, but I'm sure will improve over time.

For the non-enthusiast, the ride is hash compared to a normal car, I suspect there will be a few traded in within 18 months because those that bought on looks won't be happy with the harsh ride (it's still better than a Mini Cooper S though).

Power delivery is acceptable, smooth all the way through, no power serge at any point that I noticed (and no additonal noise after 5,000rpm ALA Honda's V-Tec), IMO a low to mid 7 second 0-100 car, once the engine is worn in may get into the high 6's, but you're unlikley to keep the clutch for very long getting to those times.

Not that Nepean hwy in Melbourne gave my any opportunity to drive through consecutive corners, but going through 4 roundabouts at an illegal speed, the car gave the impression with it's mechanical grip and lack of body roll it can handle extremely high corner speed, about on par with a friends 3 year old Boxter (very high praise).

In normal driving the brakes are exceptional, better than my BF2 with the standard FPV GT brake package. Don't know how long or well they will last in prolonged hard driving (speaking to the parts people at the dealership the pads will be priced the same as a Aurion V6).

As said by hundreds of others, the car will likely go down as a modern day classic like the original 240Z Datsun (check how much these are worth now!). If you're looking at getting one and are an enthusiast, I'd be looking at getting the current version. Very few manufactures have kept true to their original brief when making later versions of their cars. After the 240Z it took Datsun/Nissan 40 years to get back to that concept with the 350Z. Same with Toyota with their Celica range, Ford with the Capri etc.. We're dealing with large multi nationals who cater for the mass market, not a Porsche type customer base. The head bean counter will ALWASY win an argument with the head engineer by saying if we add more boot space/bigger seats/more equpment etc.. we'll appeal to a wider customer base. Mazda is the only mass market company I recal that has resisted this in some way with their MX-5. But that was through a total change of focus of their entire business plan globally. If the MX-5 concept Zoom Zoom Zoom (not the car itself) proved a flop, Mazda would be owned by Ford by the late 90's. Toyota do not have this concern hence no need to change their focus.

On a personal level, if I had to have a new car, I would order one. It's as fast as a hot hatch in a straight line, better in the corners, cheaper, and far more interesting but less practical. Because I don't, and a 2 year old RX8 GT is the same money, but is honestly more fun marginally quicker and more practical (usable rear seat, 4ish doors). I'll be looking for one of those (just so happens to be one in a dealership next to Toyota ).

Saw a black one in the flesh for the first time today.
Didn't realize what it was at first due to the angle I saw it from.
I thought it was some premium, expensive car at first. I was surprised when I realized what it was.
I like the look of it.

The're at it again, this time with BMW. Hopefully BMW give them a decent engine to fit to it this time.

News - BMW BMW and Toyota to develop joint sportscar

2 July 2012
By RON HAMMERTON
BMW and Toyota have agreed to jointly develop a sportscar as part of a planned expansion of engineering ties that will also include co-operation on fuel cells, light-weight vehicle design and electric powertrains.

The memorandum of understanding for long-term strategic collaboration was signed in Munich on Friday by Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda and BMW Group chairman Norbert Reithofer.

The deal expands on an existing pact signed last December, under which BMW will supply fuel-efficient diesel engines to Toyota for its European cars from 2014 in return for access to Toyota electric powertrain technology.

In March, the companies also agreed to pool research efforts on lithium-ion batteries.

The latest deal is widely seen as a response to similar pacts between Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler and Renault-Nissan, and General Motors and PSA Peugeot-Citroen.

BMW and Toyota said the arrangement would be confined to engineering and vehicle development, and that no shares would change hands.

Announcing the new arrangement, Mr Toyoda said Toyota and BMW shared a common principle – a mission to make ever-better cars.

“We are not coming together to become bigger,” he said. “We are not coming together to form capital ties. We are joining hands because we want to make ever-better cars.”

Mr Toyoda said that, while Toyota was strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells, BMW’s strength was in developing sportscars.

“They know how to make a car perform,” he said. “I get so excited thinking about the cars that will result from this relationship.”

Mr Toyoda indicated that the deal would involve hands-on input from both him and Mr Reithhofer, who are both renowned “car guys”.

“I very much look forward to the ‘car talk’ between both companies’ engineers at the Nürburgring and other places where cars are developed,” he said.

“The attractive and emotional products we plan cannot be born in conference rooms.

“They can only be the result of real car talk where development actually takes place.

“And I could not be happier if chairman Reithofer and I were able to join such car talk.”

Mr Reithofer likened current changes in car design to the move from typewriter to laptop to iPad, saying BMW and Toyota shared the same strategic vision of sustainable individual mobility.

“Mobility and its industrialisation are in the midst of a technological shift,” he said.

“At the BMW Group, we refer to this as ‘iconic change’. I believe this is the most decisive moment our industry has ever faced.”

No details of the proposed jointly produced sportscar were given by the companies, except to say it would involve the architecture and components.

The car is likely to borrow technologies from both sides, such as lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) panels from BMW’s i3 and i8, and an electrified powertrain from Toyota.

The latest statement mentions the sportscar architecture and components, meaning each of the companies is likely to provide its own uniquely styled body over the shared underpinnings.

Co-operation on sportscars is all the rage, with Fiat recently signing a deal with Mazda to share the next MX-5 as an Alfa Romeo.

Toyota’s new 86 sports coupe was jointly developed with Japanese partner Subaru, which shares the car as the BRZ.

The deal means BMW will sever its existing co-operation with GM on fuel-cell research, but will honour its deal to supply engines from its Mini to PSA.

For BMW, the arrangement provides engineering economies of scale to compete with Europe’s biggest motor company, Volkswagen Group, which can amortise technology developments across its 10 brands, including Porsche and Audi.

While Toyota has been pressing ahead with hybrid commercialisation through its Prius and Lexus hybrid models, BMW has developed its own ‘i’ brand of lightweight electric and plug-in hybrid cars such as the i3 city runabout and i8 hybrid sportscar.

Saw one of these today. Might have to drop in to the dealer sometime in the next week or so and see what the wait on new orders is now.

I've been looking at XR6T's, but at the end of the day I probably don't need a car that big.

And since they are naturally aspirated, they should be P-Plate legal which means that when/if I sold it in the future, they should keep their value quite well.
