I have a feeling that XR6 and XR6 Turbo, both as RWDs would be strong image makers.

How about adding Ranger's 2.2 I-4 diesel to the base RWD, would that turn even more heads around?

IMO just a simple XR Territory with XR style rims, colour, interior trim and a bespoke skirt kit would do the job. No need to change the mechanical package, people will just go for the look. Watch them roll out the door.

Great news on the export deal, sell heaps more Ford Australia!!

I also agree a XR6 (sporty) version of the Territory would be a winner.

For a struggling company its not worth building a few variants with different engines and associated drivelines, let alone thier research time..
some asthetic changes to make an XR model would be an affordable option.
an EcoLPi sounds like a good idea too. to get back soem of those fleet purchases they lost when dropping the wagon.

Or how about an "XR" version and a "premium" diesel say a Titanium LTD with a 180Kw+ engine, some extra tech like 8-way power seats to both fronts, proper keyless entry and start, front park sensors, dynamic cruise, lane assist, park assist, higher grade leather, powered tailgate, things that justify a premium price above a Titanium.

I could see a XR Territory in I6 and diesel being the biggest selling locally built variant.

something like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon but obviously not as extreme. That can expand FPVs operations a little.
Further more (and off topic) they should be looking at doing the same with the Ranger, that is a big untapped market.
FPV doesn't have to be about Falcon based products, it can look at performance based options for other vehicles in the range (leave the Fiesta and Focus to team RS in EU).

sounds good , but once the territory price starts to get up it will start to compete with other brands. its not a good market for it.
The majority are purchased for moving the whole family around. apart from asthetics on an XR/wildtrack I would like to see adjustable air suspension but that may add another 5 grand to the price

Aussie Ford Territory hits Bangkok showrooms with eyebrow-raising $100,000 price

http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mell...257AB000167B03

8 November 2012
By BARRY PARK
FORD Australia is taking a wait-and-see approach to sending more shipments of its Ford Territory to Thailand after the vehicle officially went on sale in the kingdom this week.

A fleet of 100 range-topping Territory Titanium wagons left Australia for Thailand in early August after a positive reception to a single vehicle on display at Ford’s stand the Bangkok motor show March.

Ford Thailand was able to sell eight of the Australian-built cars – each featuring a 2.7-litre turbo diesel V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive, leather trim and a DVD player – off the show stand even before the first batch of cars left Australian shores, but at the equivalent of $100,000 each for a car that retails here for just under $70,000, selling the other 92 vehicles could be a challenge.

Ford Australia spokesman Martin Gunsberg told GoAuto that the car-maker was happy to have the Territory officially on sale in the region, and said it would “look forward to seeing how the first batch go” before talking with its Thai counterparts about sending more shipments.

However, a challenge the Territory faces is that the car attracts what Gunsberg says are “non-tariff duties”, which add about $30,000 to the Thai price tag compared with the Australian market.

“This is why we chose to go with the high series only for the Thai market,” he says. Ford of Thailand did not respond to emails asking how the Territory was faring on its first week of official sales.

The Territory takes a unique place in Ford’s Thai showroom, selling side-by-side with the Thai-built and Ranger-based Everest soft-roader, and the US-built Escape compact soft-roader, both of which cost in the low $30,000s.

By comparison, buyers could cross-shop the Territory Titanium against a BMW X3 without having to dig too much deeper.

It’s not the first time Ford has attempted to sell the Territory outside its traditional Australian and New Zealand-based markets.

Small batches of its first-generation Territory were sent to the kingdom in 2006 after a similarly warm reception to the large soft-roader at the 2005 Bangkok motor show.

Sales to Thailand and South Africa helped push the SY Territory to the top of its sales segment.

However, while the export of Australian-built cars is welcome news for Ford, Thailand continues to grow as a source for cars sold here.

The latest VFACTS new-car sales data shows more than 135,000 Thai-built cars have found their way into Australian driveways so far this year, compared with more than 325,600 cars arriving from the traditional leader in terms of imports, Japan.

At slightly more than 122,100 sales, Korea is our third-largest country of origin for imported cars.

What shocked me was the $30,000 worth of non-tariff charges on top of Territory Titanium's $70,000 price in Australia.
In the last ten months Thailand has sent 122,000 vehicles to Australia, barely raising an eyebrow with 5% Tariff.

Level playing field my As....

Agreed, what were they thinking? what was the contra benefit that australia got?

the score board doesn't look good when it's
Thailand = 135,000
Australia = 100

Yep. They are quite happy to let weaker countries pull our pants down and have a laugh.

These are the same people that don't buy Australian made vehicles for their tax payer funded fleets, wonder why Aussie made cars aren't faring well against a sea of cheap imports, and why they should cough up money for an industry they say is key to Australia's skills, technology, wealth, and security.

Politicians don't become politicians because they want to serve the nation, or improve it.

To get back on track and off of my rant. I hope Ford can move those well over-priced Terri's to rich folk who want something unique.

And the Ranga tries to say we are the envy of the world, but sits by and lets our industries get raped by weaker countries. Pathetic.

Not many people envy the: 'You are Australian, which in itself qualifies for you to be raped with tax Tax.'. Which also translates to cheap foreign made stuff coming in and being sold at higher prices despite the increasing value of our dollar.

This comes from a woman who has everything paid for her, chauferred about, flown about... fall over on grass in India, and then on top of that receives a wage. I'd be feeling pretty good about my situation too if that were me.

Of course I'd have to go into a room for half the day and yell at idiot who is yelling at me with all his cronies cheering on, and my own boys doing the same. All the while accomplishing absolutely nothing. But it's not all that uncommon to my family's get-together's... so I think I could handle it.

Anyway. Ford Territory. Good to see a smaller foreign nation imposing tariffs upon our own minuscule amount of goods we send there, when their products swarm over here without reciprocation. Yey for Australia!

5% one way and 30% the other ain't Free Trade.
I guess it helps Ford though, as Focus and Fiesta get to come through benefiting from this lob sided arrangement.

What really gets my goat is if I want to manufacture in Australia, I have 3 layers of govt, tax, planning, regulation, OH&S and benefits to consider before I employ a single staffmember (and then pay them higher wages in a higher currency); at the same time DFAT will go out of their way to assist me to produce the same product offshore and ship it in (enhancing my profit too.) Honestly, you'd be mad not to. Policy is seriously out of whack and Australians are suffering with each job loss.

Maybe we're looking at the trade agreement all wrong.

What the Pollies want you to do is set up a business in Thailand and send the product back to aus.
It's great for Thialand (employ them) and great for the consumer (cheaper prices)

I'm still haven't worked out anything good about unemployment in Aus though......

You dont have to be invloved with the *** end of manufacturing to cream off the benefits. The accountant sitting in the office getting paid $120,000 doesnt need to go lift a spanner in the work area, GM or Ford dont need to be involved with making hinges / bolts to cream $10,000 a car at the end. And in the same way australia doesnt need to be involved with car manufacturing to enjoy the benefits of low cost car manufacturing. If you can tell me a few people on the BRW rich list who still work in the *** end of the company that made them rich, then you may have a point. But employment doesnt create wealth, alot of employment is used to make others wealthy (and you can earn more money but still get poorer if those around you are getting richer quicker), getting cars made cheaply overseas is one of them.
