Sorry for picking up an old thread, just wanted to know if you've still got air-con? Or do you have to get rid of it?

i wouldnt even bother... you have to grind heaps at the timing cover and swap the harmonic balancer...
your better off keeping the serpentine setup... much easier, plus you will have a 110amp alternator... so i went with the serpentine setup...

can existing accessories be converted or do serpentine type accessories also need to be purchased, particularly ps pump and the like...

Santo, sphell put a AU motor in his EA keeping the EA belt setup. If you send him a PM I'm sure he'd be able to tell you more about it.

if you get the pulley from an ef-au then you can keep your power steering pump. i swapped mine over.
you will however need to get a new alternator and ac compressor

ok found a motor today... 70k on it...
it is complete with accessories... they only had vct xr6 engines but i would like to cam it up, so am not going to go this avenue... there isnt much diff between std. and au engines anyway? so all i need is: 1 x au motor 1 x set of thermos 1 x accessories to run single belt setup 1 x EA engine mounts and need to be aware of: 1. need to use my manifold 2. two holes dont line up on bellhousing 3. sump / k-frame need to be ground a bit 4. radiator pipe slightly different, but problem can be solved.. i'm looking at doing it all on saturday... is there anything else i should know, or is there any big benefit of trying to find an xr6 engine.. i can't not run VCT and run a normal cam can i? on a standard AU motor i can run the cam i currently run in my car (977b) and valve springs? any help appreciated..

Earlier cams are not compatible with earlier engines, unless you have a late EL cam.
im not sure about the VCT setup, its run off engine oil pressure, but I dont know if its a pulse-width-modulated signal or just a pure 5v or 12v signal...if it was a straight signal you could set up some kind of shiftlight arrangement but using it to change over the cam timing instead of illuminating a bulb, but you would have to do some research on that one.... VCT and AU non-VCT cams should be interchangable, which one is 'better' I don't know. dont use the thin metal 'sandwich' plate thingo that comes on your standard engine (between the engine and gearbox) when you swap them over, if you toss it the sump on the AU motor will sit flush against the bellhousing, making it a bit stronger or less resistant to flex IMHO. |

in all honesty.. would it be better bolting up an AU motor or is it better to run a late model motor or just rebuild the 3.9?

yea, use your existing manifold..
dont worry about the bellhousing... it will be fine... you need to grind a little off the sump, not the k-frame i had a reducer made from stainless steel for the difference in radiator hoses... cost m $20 no, you will not be able to use your current cam. not sure about valve springs.

valvesprings are different.
All the differences between the motors are actually IMPROVEMENTS - smaller valve stems, springs, collets, cam lobes etc all contribute to lower valvetrain mass, meaning an engine that revs quicker and 'freer' Au engines have a better rod to stroke ratio, meaning the rods don't have to work on as bigger angles, less side loading on bores means less wear, less power loss through friction, more revs, more hp. Each main bearing cap is held in place by 6 bolts, instead of the two on our engines...again, stronger, stiffer, more reliable. The head responds better to porting than any previous head, again, more possible hp. AU engines poo all over earlier engines from a great height, no contest.* Q: How fun is it to rev an engine to the end of the factory tacho, and have the car hammer all the way to 6000rpm? A: Very fun...OED666 was kind enough to let me drive his car after we finished it, you couldn't wipe the smile off my dial with a sledgehammer. *thats not to say earlier engines are poo, they are very very good, it's just AU engines are very very very good... |

i read in other threads that you need the XH tensioner to have the serpentine with the old manifold, did you need it?

No they didn't use the XH tensioner, they used all AU gear (well pretty sure anyway).
It does all fit but only just! |

I have a HP XR6 motor... i bought an xh tensioner and it seemed very similar (so i didnt put it on)... but the guy i bought the motor off said that i should get an xh tensioner... so i am assuming its an au tensioner...

I do believe that one of the times that you wound the tacho out as described was whilst royally serving me in my "Captain Pugwash" machine.
